A compilation of news articles about a third world war/nuclear war, famine, pandemics, economic collapse and earthquakes starting March 2015

While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples approached him privately, saying: “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your presence and of the conclusion of the system of things?” In answer Jesus said to them: .... You are going to hear of wars and reports of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for these things must take place, but the end is not yet. “For nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be food shortages and earthquakes in one place after another. All these things are a beginning of pangs of distress. -Matthew 24

The Big One: 'Large scale motion' detected along San Andreas fault

Previously uninterpreted data showing vertical movement of the fault’s crust detected several millimeters of uplift and subsidence in surface areas as large as 125 miles.
While these hotspots were predicted in models before, this is the first time scientists were able to block out white noise and other diluting factors such as precipitation and local surface geology.
Published in the Nature Geosciences journal, researcher Samuel Howell said they were able to use the new modeling technique to “break down the noisy signals to isolate a simple vertical motion pattern that curiously straddled the San Andreas fault.”
The San Andreas Fault is the tectonic boundary between the Pacific and North American Plates and runs close to major cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco as well as nuclear power plants
‘The Big One’ is expected to produce a game-changing earthquake within the next 30 years causing massive devastation to California.
Federal, state, and military officials have been working on contingency plans for the looming disaster, which could see 14,000 dead and 30,000 injured, according to AP.
A 2005 study published in the journal Nature found the fault had reached a sufficient level of stress for an earthquake of a magnitude greater than 7.0, with the risk concentrated on the area of the fault near Los Angeles.
According to the new research, scientists will be able to study and understand the behavior of faults, even when dormant, using the vertical readings in the hope of predicting activity.
Emergency services will also benefit from more accurate seismic hazard estimates, predicting where on the surface movement is more likely to occur when ‘The Big One’ eventually strikes.
San Francisco’s 1906 earthquake of magnitude 7.8 left more than half of the city’s residents homeless and killed between 700 and 3,000 people.

At 9:43 PM Eastern US last night (Sunday, June 19) the Armed Forces of the United States were reportedly ordered to set condition "DEFCON 3."   This is an extraordinary development and signals serious trouble, LIKELY requiring an expedited military response.
The defense readiness condition (DEFCON) is an alert state used by the United States Armed Forces.
The DEFCON system was developed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) and unified and specified combatant commands. It prescribes five graduated levels of readiness (or states of alert) for the U.S. military. It increases in severity from DEFCON 5 (least severe) to DEFCON 1 (most severe) to match varying military situations.  The chart below explains the system - click the image (twice) to enlarge.
To understand the severity of DefCon 3, it would help to realize that on September 10, 2001, the US Military was at DefCon 5.  When the attacks of September 11 took place, the US Military was upgraded only to DefCon 4.
For the US to have implemented DefCon 3 at 9:43 PM EDT on a Sunday night, means somethingvery big is taking place.
At 10:14 PM EDT on June 19  "Unusual strategic activity" was observed in Russia.
At 10: 25 PM EDT on June 19, "We do not know what Russia is reacting to; nothing observable in any operations theater."
At 11:01 PM EDT on June 19 "Unusual United States strategic activity now being observed.Source reports to SuperStation95 "I have no context for any of this. I do not know why this is taking place."
At 11:32 PM EDT on June 19 "Multiple sources verifying information. Still looking for more - information is still sketchy."
At 12:38 AM EDT this morning, June 20,  "Multiple, solidly reliable confirmations of DEFCON-3"
At 1:35 AM EDT this morning, June 20,  "RC135V has just left from Mildenhall (UK) to do a flyover of large armored and infantry movements ACROSS ALL OF RUSSIA! We are getting word of movement from ALL 4 MILTARY DISTRICTS! Also seeing a pattern of almost all Russian military Satellites changing position
At 1:42 AM EDT - Very long coded message over US "SkyKing" network 8992 KHz
At 1:50 AM EDT - OSINT and other sources indicate that the US military has gone into full nuclear readiness mode.
Military channels are transmitting unusual encrypted messages at 11175 Khz.
Sources indicate that multiple armed US bombers are in the air. Some bases no longer have any grounded aircraft.
Fighters are also in the air.
Local civilians are making report of increased activity at US military bases across the country.
US response appears to be a reflection of Russian activities, based on available information.
Buzzer at 4625 KHz is no longer active.
At 2:05 AM EDT June 20, "It's official, there is some type of Crisis.  Numerous, extremely high level officials arriving at Pentagon."
At 2:23 AM EDT June 20, B52 activity overheard via LiveATC.com ATC feed. Nothing further other than they are active from ANDERSEN AFB, Guam
At 2:45 AM EDT June 20, NATO Military activity taking place in the Baltics
At 3:00 AM EDT June 20,  - "NATO Movements underway.  Still no info about the actual nature of the "Crisis."
At 4:23 AM EDT June 20,  - We are beginning to receive information from our European sources that several fighter launches have taken place in Europe. Unknown if related to the current situation or for a drill.
U.S. and Russian forces are in the air, likely moving to control points. We have no reports of any engagements. Domestic assets are moving into defensive positions.

American and Russian fighter jets had a tense showdown in the skies above Syria as the Russians dropped bombs on U.S.-backed rebels.
U.S. and Russian fighter jets bloodlessly tangled in the air over Syria on June 16 as the American pilots tried and failed to stop the Russians from bombing U.S.-backed rebels in southern Syria near the border with Jordan.
The aerial close encounter underscores just how chaotic Syria’s skies have become as Russia and the U.S.-led coalition work at cross-purposes, each dropping bombs in support of separate factions in the five-year-old civil war.
The near-clash also highlights the escalating risk of American and Russian forces actually coming to blows over Syria, potentially sparking a much wider conflict between the world’s leading nuclear powers.

The incident began when at least two twin-engine Su-34 bombers, some of Moscow’s most advanced warplanes, struck what the Pentagon described as a “border garrison” housing around 200 U.S.-supported rebels in At Tanf on the Syrian side of the Syria-Jordan border.

The rebels had been “conducting counter-ISIL operations in the area,” the Pentagon stated on June 18, using an alternative acronym for ISIS.

The United States and its allies in Syria clearly did not expect the air strike. The rebels in At Tanf are party to a shaky ceasefire agreement between rebel forces and the regime of Syrian president Bashar Al Assad—and, by extension, the Russian military contingent backing Al Assad. The Los Angeles Times reported that Russian planes had not previously been active over At Tanf.
The Su-34s’ initial strike wounded, and perhaps killed, some of the rebels in At Tanf.
The U.S. Navy scrambled F/A-18 fighters to intercept the Russians, the Los Angeles Timesreported. The Navy has deployed two aircraft carriers to the region for strikes on ISIS. As the F/A-18s approached the Su-34s, officials with U.S. Central Command—which oversees America’s wars in the Middle East and Afghanistan—used a special hotline to contact their Russian counterparts directing Russia’s own intervention in Syria.
Arriving over At Tanf, the American pilots apparently spoke directly to the Russian aviators. “Pilots CAN communicate with one another on a communications channel set up to avoid air accidents,” Central Command confirmed in a statement to The Daily Beast.
Washington and Moscow had established the hotline as part of a so-called “Safety of Flight Memorandum of Understanding” that the two governments signed in October specifically in order to avoid the kind of aerial confrontation that occurred over Syria last week.
With the American jets flying close enough to visually identify the Su-34s, the Russians departed the air space over At Tanf. Some time shortly thereafter, the F/A-18s ran low on fuel and left the area in order to link up with an aerial tanker. That’s when the Su-34s reportedly returned to At Tanf —and bombed the rebels again.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the second strike killed first-responders assisting survivors of the first bombing run.
The next day, senior U.S. Defense Department officials organized an “extraordinary” video conference with Russian counterparts to discuss the incident. The meeting included Acting Assistant Secretary for International Security Affairs Elissa Slotkin and U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, a strategic planner on the Pentagon’s joint staff, plus unspecified Russian Ministry of Defense officials.
“Department officials expressed strong concerns about the attack on the coalition-supported counter-ISIL forces at the At Tanf garrison, which included forces that are participants in the cessation of hostilities in Syria, and emphasized that those concerns would be addressed through ongoing diplomatic discussions on the cessation of hostilities,” Defense Department spokesman Peter Cook explained in a statement.
"Regarding safety, department officials conveyed that Russia’s continued strikes at At Tanf, even after U.S. attempts to inform Russian forces through proper channels of on-going coalition air support to the counter-ISIL forces, created safety concerns for U.S. and coalition forces,” Cook continued. “Department officials requested Russian responses to address those concerns.”
Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov confirmed, via the country’s state-owned media, that the teleconference took place—but he did not specify the results of the “extraordinary” meeting.
Russian warplanes had previously shadowed planes belonging to the U.S.-led coalition over Syria, but the coalition always described the Russians’ behavior as “professional.” By contrast, in April Russian Su-24 bombers repeatedly buzzed the U.S. Navy warship USS Donald Cook while the vessel sailed in international waters in the Black Sea. A Pentagon spokesman called the Russians’ actions in that incident “provocative and unprofessional.”
The Kremlin should be keenly aware of the potential for unwanted—and potentially destabilizing—bloodshed that exists in the air over Syria. In November, a Russian Su-24 bomber flying a mission over Syria strayed over the Syria-Turkey border into Turkey—and a Turkish F-16 fighterpromptly shot it down.
The two Russian crew members ejected. One flier died when Syrian rebels on the ground opened fire on his parachute. Russian, Syrian and Iranian forces launched a complex rescue mission that ultimately retrieved the surviving pilot. One Russian marine died and a helicopter was destroyed during that operation.
The fallout from the November incident continues, with Russia and Turkey exchanging threats—and Moscow imposing economic sanctions on Ankarra including limits on some food imports to Russia from Turkey.
It’s not clear how close the U.S. fighters came to attacking and potentially shooting down the Su-34s over At Tanf. Central Command declined to say what the rules of engagement are for American pilots flying over Syria. “ROE are actually specifics that we don’t get into,” Central Command said in a statement.
The last time a U.S. military warplane shot down a Russian—actually, Soviet—plane was in 1953, over Korea or China, depending on which historians you believe. The last time a Russian or Soviet warplane shot down an American aircraft was in 1970, when a U.S. Army plane strayed over Armenia.

As of 6:28 AM EDT  June 20,  Confirmation that there are heavy troop and equipment movements in Europe and in Russia. It seems to be a show of force. The military are not saying anything, but the rumor mill believes that there has been a strike by Russia on American Rebels in Syria overnight, which has led to a war of words.

Now eerily quiet . . . .

At 2:30 PM EDT June 20,  From what we can tell, most of what occurred last night is still on going. We still do not have much information as to what is happening
As of 3:00 PM EDT June 20, We can confirm that NATO E-3A Dentry aircraft have been operating over Poland almost all day, with heavy electronic spying on Russian forces as shown on map below:
As of 3:30 PM EDT -- Russian defense ministry confirms officially "troop movements" right across Russia, they are calling it an enormous "exercise."  To reiterate the Russians themselves are now confirming massive troop movements across Russia

As of 3:41 PM EDT -- The State Department and Pentagon ordered the families of U.S. diplomats and military personnel Tuesday to leave posts in Turkey.
The two agencies said dependents of American staffers at the U.S. consulate in Adana, the Incirlik air base and two other locations must leave. The so-called "ordered departure" notice means the relocation costs will be covered by the government.
Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said it was being done "out of an abundance of caution" for the safety of the families in that region. He said he was not aware of a deadline for the families to leave, but said "this will move very quickly."
In a statement, the military's European Command said the step "allows for the deliberate, safe return of family members from these areas due to continued security concerns in the region."
The orders cover the Adana consulate, U.S. military dependents in Incirlik, Ismir and Mugla as well as family of U.S. government civilians at Ismir and Mugla. The State Department also restricted official travel to that which it considers "mission critical." Cook said that the order does not affect about 100 family members who are based in Istanbul and Ankara.

UPDATE 4:00 PM EDT --
Trainloads of heavy military equipment are now being reported as "on the move" in many, many, locations throughout the USA.
A rail-trail loaded with tons of military vehicles and equipment was spotted and filmed at the Cajon Pass, between So. Cal’s San Bernardino Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains TODAY:
The equipment seen in the video above consists of Bradley's,  MRAP (RG-33), Armored Recovery Vehicles based off Abrams and Patton (M88), M9 CEV's, M777 Howitzers, HEMTT and FMTV Trucks

At 4:11 PM EDT  -- SuperStation95 has confirmed with our sources in the Pentagon and in the State Department that the United States has decided to "move forward with plans to strike Syrian President Bashar Assad's command and control systems and conduct limited strikes on other Syrian assets."
We have also confirmed with those same sources that, upon being informed of this, Russia made made it explicitly clear they will DEFEND SYRIA by engaging and destroying anyone attempting to attack their ally, President Bashar Assad.

This is a developing story.  Please check back. . .  5:10  PM EDT June 20, 2016

Keith Neumeyer is well known for his unabashed criticisms of government and central banks, having recently highlighted that the entire precious metals market space has been infiltrated by a small concentration of players who are manipulating the market. As the Chief Executive of First Majestic Silver, one of Canada’s hottest publicly traded companies, and the Chairman of mineral bank First Mining Finance, he pulls no punches in his most recent interview with TF Metals Report in which he destroys the notion that the Federal Reserve is looking out for the best interests of the average investor and warns that the rampant market intervention in which they are involved will soon lead to serious disruptions to financial markets and the global monetary system.
Quite honestly, if I were part of government I would tell these Fed governors to shut their mouths. I would make it part of their job description that they aren’t even allowed to discuss anything openly with anyone publicly… They all want to become movie stars… they just can’t get out of their own way… every one of these governors tells a different story… whatever they feel like saying at the time… and none of the stuff that comes out of their mouth is reality. They’re just a bunch of academics… they’re not part of the real world… they’ve never had a real job in their life…
They think that what they’re doing is actually helpful for humanity… but really what they’re doing is just hurting everyone.
Full interview with Keith Neumeyer:

(Watch at Youtube)
They’re not letting the markets actually be markets… I’ve never seen the government or the central banks so involved in the markets as they are today… these politicians and bureaucrats actually think they have the authority to manipulate the markets on behalf of the people… yet they are hurting the people…
I think the entire system has to be dismantled and we have to start over again…
Can you imagine negative interest rates in North America?
There’d be riots in the streets if that happens… The long bond is hitting new lows as we speak.
We’re getting really close to Armageddon here. It’s going to be absolutely nuts.
To any impartial observer who has no ties to The Fed, government or mainstream financial media, the writing is on the wall and the pain is undoubtedly coming.
And when it does, Neumeyer says the only option is to be in hard assets. That’s why he has gone all-in through his company First Mining Finance with the acquisition of high value precious metals properties.
You just have to be in precious metals. There really are no alternatives… gold, silver… you’ve gotta be all in as I am… it’s just the only place to be as far as I’m concerned.
Neumeyer highlights the fact that large investors and even governments are actively adding to their precious metals positions in anticipation of a significant monetary event.
They know that eventually all of the manipulations will be exposed for the fraud they are. When that happens, look for a total detonation of financial markets and traditional investments like stocks, bonds and real estate.
The only thing that will survive such an event, according to Neuymeyer, will be those historical relics of last resort and the only true money during times of extreme crisis – gold and silver.

BIG ONE COMING? Scientists say 9.3magnitude quake possible after TEN tremors in ten days
A DEVASTATING 9.3 magnitude earthquake powerful enough to unleash a tsunami could strike the west coast of America after a series of tremors on a major fault line.

PUBLISHED: 05:48, Fri, Jun 17, 2016 | UPDATED: 15:04, Fri, Jun 17, 2016

Emergency services were already preparing for how to deal with a terrible off-shore earthquake in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, further north off the west coast of America, when the Californian quakes started.

They were just completing their four-day major emergency test run when a 5.2 magnitude quake hit Borrego Springs, San Diego County, in California last Friday.
The mid-sized earthquake caused more than 200 aftershocks – some more than three on the richter scale - and could be felt from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border.
Egill Hauksson, a research professor of geophysics at Caltech, said of the 5.2 quake: "It was the biggest one for a while.”
A 3.1 magnitude quake followed on June 13, 14 miles from Borrego Spring according to the USGS. The high number of force three or more quakes has led to fears of what may be to come.
It was the biggest one for a while.

Egill Hauksson, a research professor of geophysics at Caltech

The quakes have taken place on the San Jacinto fault, the region's most active, Mr Hauksson said.
Scientists say both the California fault lines and the Cascadia Subduction Zone are long overdue a major earthquake of magnitude eight or above.
In a statement after the Cascadia Rising emergency tests a spokesman said: “Subduction zone earthquakes are said to be among the most powerful, and can exceed a 9 magnitude."
Scientists at the USGS have revealed their computer modelling tests indicate the San Andreas Fault in California is capable of producing earthquakes of a maximum magnitude of 8.3.
This is still of concern as the 1906 earthquake that devastated San Francisco had a lower magnitude of 7.9.
But they have revealed the Cascadia Subduction Zone is of most concern.
It runs about 60 miles offshore along the Pacific coast from northern California to Vancouver Island, so major cities including Portland, Seattle and Vancouver are within its tsunami range, threatening millions of people and major infrastructure.
The USGS has worryingly confirmed the same computer models show it is capable of producing  an earthquake with a magnitude up to 9.3, which would likely trigger huge tsunami waves.
This would be more powerful than the magnitude 9 tsunami-causing quake that hit Japan in 2011, claiming thousands of lives and taking out nuclear reactors.
Worse still, many scientists say the US is not yet prepared to deal with such a natural disaster, and it could strike at an time.

NATO Says It Might Now Have Grounds To Attack Russia

by Tyler Durden - Jun 16, 2016 4:00 AM

On Tuesday, June 14th, NATO announced that if a NATO member country becomes the victim of a cyber attack by persons in a non-NATO country such as Russia or China, then NATO’s Article V “collective defense” provision requires each NATO member country to join that NATO member country if it decides to strike back against the attacking country. The preliminary decision for this was made two years ago after Crimea abandoned Ukraine and rejoined Russia, of which it had been a part until involuntarily transferred to Ukraine by the Soviet dictator Nikita Khrushchev in 1954. That NATO decision was made in anticipation of Ukraine’s ultimately becoming a NATO member country, which still hasn’t happened. However, only now is NATO declaring cyber war itself to be included as real “war” under the NATO Treaty’s “collective defense” provision.

NATO is now alleging that because Russian hackers had copied the emails on Hillary Clinton’s home computer, this action of someone in Russia taking advantage of her having privatized her U.S. State Department communications to her unsecured home computer and of such a Russian’s then snooping into the U.S. State Department business that was stored on it, might constitute a Russian attack against the United States of America, and would, if the U.S. President declares it to be a Russian invasion of the U.S., trigger NATO’s mutual-defense clause and so require all NATO nations to join with the U.S. government in going to war against Russia, if the U.S. government so decides.

NATO had produced in 2013 (prior to the take-over of Ukraine) an informational propaganda video alleging that “cyberattacks” by people in Russia or in China that can compromise U.S. national security, could spark an invasion by NATO, if the U.S. President decides that the cyberattack was a hostile act by the Russian or Chinese government. In the video, a British national-security expert notes that this would be an “eminently political decison” for the U.S. President to make, which can be made only by the U.S. President, and which only that person possesses the legal authority to make. NATO, by producing this video, made clear that any NATO-member nation’s leader who can claim that his or her nation has been ‘attacked’ by Russia, possesses the power to initiate a NATO war against Russia. In the current instance, it would be U.S. President Barack Obama. However, this video also said that NATO could not automatically accept such a head-of-state’s allegation calling the cyber-attack an invasion, but instead the country that’s being alleged to have perpetrated the attack would have to have claimed, or else been proven, to have carried it out. With the new NATO policy, which was announced on June 14th, in which a cyber-attack qualifies automatically as constituting “war” just like any traditional attack, such a claim or proof of the target-nation’s guilt might no longer be necessary. But this has been left vague in the published news reports about it.

In the context of the June 14th NATO announcement that cyberwar is on the same status as physical war, Obama might declare the U.S. to have been invaded by Russia when former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s State Department emails were copied by someone in Russia.

It’s a hot issue now between Russia and the United States, and so, for example, on the same day, June 14th, Reuters headlined“Moscow denies Russian involvement in U.S. DNC hacking”, and reported that, “Russia on Tuesday denied involvement in the hacking of the Democratic National Committee database that U.S. sources said gained access to all opposition research on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.”

In previous times, espionage was treated as being part of warfare, and, after revelations became public that the U.S. was listening in on the phone conversations of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, espionage has become recognized as being simply a part of routine diplomacy (at least for the United States); but, now, under the new NATO policy, it might be treated as being equivalent to a physical invasion by an enemy nation.

At the upcoming July 8th-9th NATO Summit meeting, which will be happening in the context of NATO’s biggest-ever military exercises on and near the borders of Russia, called “Atlantic Resolve”, prospective NATO plans to invade Russia might be discussed in order to arrive at a consensus plan for the entire alliance. However, even if that happens, it wouldn’t be made public, because war-plans never are.

The origin of this stand-off between the U.S. and Russia goes back to promises that the West had made in 1990 to the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, not to expand NATO up to the borders of Russia, and the West’s subsequentviolations of those repeatedly made promises.

Gorbachev disbanded the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact, on the basis of those false assurances from Western leaders. Thus, Russia is surrounded now by enemies, including former Warsaw Pact nations and even some former regions of the Soviet Union itself, such as Ukraine and the Baltic republics, which now host NATO forces. NATO is interpreting Russia’s acceptance of the Crimeans’ desire to abandon Ukraine and rejoin Russia following the 2014 Ukrainian coup, as constituting a showing of an intent by Russia to invade NATO nations that had formerly been part of the Soviet Union and of the Warsaw Pact, such as Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia; and this is the alleged reason for America’s Operation Atlantic Resolve, and the steep increase in U.S. troops and weapons in those nations that border on Russia.

Concept drawing of a hypersonic aircraft

Russian Top Secret Hypersonic Glider Can Penetrate Any Missile Defense

20:28 11.06.201

Russia's new Yu-74 ultra-maneuverable hypersonic glide vehicles may become yet another response to the deployment of NATO's missile installations in Eastern Europe, according to military analysts.

Going head to head with the United States and China, Russia has been developing its own hypersonic weapons during the past few years.

A hypersonic weapon usually has a speed between 3,840 miles per hour (Mach 5) and 7,680 miles per hour (Mach 10). Furthermore, these systems use sophisticated technologies for maneuvering and boast allow the rapid delivery of warheads, precise targeting and survivability against wide range of missile defense systems.

Last year Russia conducted a series of tests of the Yu-71 hypersonic attack aircraft. The Yu-71 is part of secret missile program codenamed "Project 4202." The glider was said to reach speeds of up to 7,000 miles per hour. Due to its outstanding maneuverability and high speed the system can overcome any defense shield, military experts noted.

But that is half the story. According to analytical website Ostkraft.ru, this year Russia successfully tested its experimental Yu-74 hypersonic glide vehicle. The Yu-74 was carried by the intercontinental-range RS-18A (NATO codename: SS-19 Stiletto) ballistic missile system.

The glider was launched from the Dombarovsky missile base in the Orenburg region and hit a target located at Kura Missile Test Range in northern Kamchatka region, the Russian Far East.

The Yu-74 system specification as well as the details of the test remains top secret. Reportedly, the gliders are developed to be loaded onto Russia's RS-28 Sarmat (SS-X-30 by NATO classification) — the state-of-the-art heavy liquid-propelled intercontinental ballistic missiles which are currently being developed for the Russian army.

Designed to carry up to 24 nuclear-loaded Yu-74 gliders, each Sarmat ballistic missile will be able to hit any target located within a 6.2 thousand mile radius in one hour.

Each Yu-74 glider can be equipped with a nuclear warhead, electronic warfare (EW) applications or false target simulators.

"These features guarantee penetration of any existing and prospective missile defense system of a potential adversary. By adopting such systems Russia's Strategic Missile Forces will significantly increase their efficiency," the analysts emphasize.

The website also calls attention to the fact that the project aimed at creating Russia's hypersonic air-launched cruise missiles has also entered its final phase. Reportedly, new hypersonic cruise missiles will be in many respects similar to the Yu-74.

Ostkraft analysts emphasize that the Yu-74 gliders would not only evade NATO's missile defense systems but will be also capable of penetrating through the US THAAD shield. The analysts argue that while the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system is effective in intercepting outdated R-17 Elbrus tactical ballistic missiles, it is potentially vulnerable to the threat posed by advanced missile systems.

The Russians are taking NATO's saber-rattling and muscle-flexing in Eastern Europe seriously, French journalist Victor Ayoli noted in his recent article for Agora Vox. Therefore, Moscow will do whatever it takes to secure Russia's borders  to prevent a repeat of the Wehrmacht's Operation Barbarossa invasion in 1941,the journalist stressed.

"Russians are ordinary people. They are afraid of war and they really want to avoid it. The last one cost [the Soviets] more than twenty-eight million lives. But once lured into war, they fight it to the bitter end. This unique trait of the Russian national character the West has misunderstood countless times in the last 1,000 years," Ayoli emphasized.

Russia to send nuclear submarines to tickle Harry Truman’s nerves

Russia will respond to the entrance of the USS Porter into the Black Sea. The US warship entered the Black Sea waters on June 6 to participate in NATO's "Atlantic Resolve" drills. Russia will take adequate measures in response, Director of the Department for European Cooperation at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Andrey Kelin said, RIA Novosti reports.

According to Kelin, "American ships enter the Black Sea from time to time, which, of course, we do not approve, and we will, without a doubt, take measures of response planning," the official said.
Kelin also commented on the relocation of a US aircraft carrier from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea. According to Kelin, there is nothing new in the movement of US ships. There is freedom of navigation and the right of innocent passage, he added. However, the fact that such moves are being made on the eve of the NATO summit in Warsaw is, in fact, a demonstration of power that leads to a certain increase in tensions.

Washington said earlier that the relocation of USS Harry Truman from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea against the rules of subordination came as a signal to Moscow to demonstrate flexibility and the scope of the Navy."

According to deputy director of the Institute of CIS countries, Vladimir Yevseyev, the Americans have relocated the Harry Truman aircraft carrier with only one goal - to put pressure on the Russian Federation. "It should be understood that such pressure can show no effect on Russia. If the aircraft carrier has the nerve to stay in the new location for a long time, Russia will send multi-purpose nuclear submarines to the area to keep an eye on the vessel. I do not think that American servicemen on board the aircraft carrier will like the idea," Vladimir Yevseyev told Pravda.Ru.

Earthquake Near Palm Springs Felt Across Southern California

A moderate earthquake struck in desert wilderness nearly 30 miles south of Palm Springs and was felt across much of Southern California, but no significant damage was reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude-5.2 temblor struck just after 1 a.m. Friday. USGS geophysicist Amy Vaughan says it was strong enough to have woken people up.
She says the shallow quake touched off a series of smaller aftershocks, registering between magnitude-2.6 to 3.6.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Riverside County Sheriff's Department say they had no reports of damage.
Facebook and other social media sites carried posts from people in San Diego and Los Angeles, about 100 miles to the west, reporting they felt the quake.

NATO's Anaconda-16 War Games in Poland

NATO War Games Near Russia 'Pushing Humanity Towards World War III'

MILITARY & INTELLIGENCE

NATO has begun its Anaconda-16 war game, calling for the largest assembly of foreign forces in Poland since World War II.

On Monday, NATO launched its largest war game in decades, near the Russian border, as part of what analysts call the "summer of provocation," a bid to reignite the Cold War intended to force Moscow to starve its domestic economy to ramp up its military to meet a growing external threat.
The war game, titled Anaconda-16, will take place in Poland ahead of next month’s NATO summit in Warsaw, where officials are expected to approve permanent troops to be stationed in the country and throughout eastern Europe, to combat what they consistently refer to 'Russian aggression.'
The 10-day military exercise calls for the participation of some 31,000 NATO troops and thousands of military vehicles, in what will be the single largest movement of foreign forces inside of Poland since World War II, rehashing painful memories for many Russians.
In June 2015, Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to disarm the ‘Russian aggression’ talking point disseminated by neoconservative Beltway think tanks, pointing to the absurdity of Russia instigating a war against NATO member states.
"I think that only an insane person, and only in a dream, can imagine that Russia would suddenly attack NATO," said Putin, adding, "I think some countries are simply taking advantage of people’s fears with regard to Russia."
Regardless of the motives, the escalation of a NATO military presence close to Russian borders has reached a fever pitch, with the US establishing a missile-defense system in Romania and undertaking the development of a separate missile shield in neighboring Poland.
Beyond attempting to strangle Moscow’s nuclear deterrent, the Obama administration has also increased Pentagon spending in countries neighboring Russia by four-fold.
The Obama administration is not alone in its efforts to increase a rhetoric of threat. In recent months Poland has called for an influx of US troops and military aid, citing concerns that Russia may seek to invade. Germany has agreed to dispatch troops into the country for the war game, marking the first time that German soldiers have entered Polish territory since the Nazis used it as a route to invade the Soviet Union.
What is the purpose of the Anaconda-16 War Game?

"Well this is a series of so many NATO exercises on Russia’s borders during the summer, you can call it the summer of provocation," said McAdams. "This is the largest of the military exercises, and is the largest movement of foreign forces within Poland since World War II, so that is very significant and it is all being sold to everyone else as a protection against Russian aggression."

"In reality, it is NATO troops that are outside of Russia’s borders and it is absolutely a provocation, another step in trying to poke Russia in the eye," explained the security analyst.

Is Poland important to the United States strategically?

"Poland is massively important because of the historical enmity between the Poles and Russia along with the location," explained John Wight. "Daniel is absolutely right in calling this the summer of provocation, what we are witnessing is the recrudescence of the policy of containment that was devised after the Second World War."

"Containment, however, is a bit of a misnomer because it isn’t a policy of containment, it is a policy of aggression designed to surround Russia politically, economically, and ultimately militarily, in order to keep Russia’s government paranoid and to apply pressure on Russia to cause it to implode internally," said Wight, explaining the existential threat that Moscow faces from US-led saber rattling.

Is Russia a counter-hegemonic force against the United States?

"I wouldn’t say that Russia set out to be counter-hegemonic, but certain events have taken place," suggested McAdams. "You know the famous Putin speech where he essentially said ‘We’ve had it, we’ve had enough, and we’ve taken it for a number of years,’ and this was right before Russia accepted Syria’s invitation to put down the jihadists."

"I believe Russia has been pushed into this position, but if you talk about the early dates of the Obama administration, there was still this idea of resetting relations," said McAdams. "Instead, what happened in the Obama administration, and it happens in every administration, in which the neocons swoop in and take over foreign policy."

"You have people like Victoria Nuland who served Dick Cheney prior to President Obama. What on earth were they thinking by allowing somebody like this to have control of power, somebody who is a member of the Kagan neocon crime family, as the wife to Robert Kagan. This is how the neocons do it and they swallowed the Obama administration like a cancer that keeps growing," stated the security analyst.

"The neoconservatives now have control of Obama’s Russian policy and I think they are pushing us towards World War III," asserted McAdams.

How Russia Is Preparing For WWIII

How Could a Failed Computer Chip Lead to Nuclear War?

, physicist & co-director, Global Security | June 6, 2016, 1:17 pm EDT

The US early warning system is on watch 24/7, looking for signs of a nuclear missile launched at the United States. As a highly complex system with links to sensors around the globe and in space, it relies heavily on computers to do its job. So, what happens if there is a glitch in the computers?
Between November 1979 and June 1980, those computers led to several false warnings of all-out nuclear attack by the Soviet Union—and a heart-stopping middle-of-the-night telephone call.

NORA command post, c. 1982. (Source: US National Archives)

I described one of these glitches previously. That one, in 1979, was actually caused by human and systems errors: A technician put a training tape in a computer that then—inexplicably—routed the information to the main US warning centers. The Pentagon’s investigator stated that they were never able to replicate the failure mode to figure out what happened.

Just months later, one of the millions of computer chips in the early warning system went haywire, leading to incidents on May 28, June 3, and June 6, 1980.

The June 3 “attack”

By far the most serious of the computer chip problems occurred on  early June 3, when the main US warning centers all received notification of a large incoming nuclear strike. The president’s National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brezezinski woke at 3 am to a phone call telling him a large nuclear attack on the United States was underway and he should prepare to call the president. He later said he had not woken up his wife, assuming they would all be dead in 30 minutes.

Like the November 1979 glitch, this one led NORAD to convene a high-level “Threat Assessment Conference,” which includes the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and is just below the level that involves the president. Taking this step sets lots of things in motion to increase survivability of U.S. strategic forces and command and control systems. Air Force bomber crews at bases around the US got in their planes and started the engines, ready for take-off. Missile launch offices were notified to standby for launch orders. The Pacific Command’s Airborne Command Post took off from Hawaii. The National Emergency Airborne Command Post at Andrews Air Force Base taxied into position for a rapid takeoff.

The warning centers, by comparing warning signals they were getting from several different sources, were able to determine within a few minutes they were seeing a false alarm—likely due to a computer glitch. The specific cause wasn’t identified until much later. At that point, a Pentagon document matter-of-factly stated that a 46-cent computer chip “simply wore out.”

Short decision times increase nuclear risks
As you’d hope, the warning system has checks built into it. So despite the glitches that caused false readings, the warning officers were able to catch the error in the short time available before the president would have to make a launch decision.

We know these checks are pretty good because there have been a surprising number of incidents like these, and so far none have led to nuclear war.

But we also know they are not foolproof.
The risk is compounded by the US policy of keeping its missile on hair-trigger alert, poised to be launched before an incoming attack could land. Maintaining an option of launching quickly on warning of an attack makes the time available for sorting out confusing signals and avoiding a mistaken launch very short.

For example, these and other unexpected incidents have led to considerable confusion on the part of the operators. What if the confusion had persisted longer? What might have happened if something else had been going on that suggested the warning was real? In his book, My Journey at the Nuclear Brink, former Secretary of Defense William Perry asks what might have happened if these glitches “had occurred during the Cuban Missile Crisis, or a Mideast war?”

There might also be unexpected coincidences. What if, for example, US sensors had detected an actual Soviet missile launch around the same time? In the early 1980s the Soviets were test launching 50 to 60 missiles per year—more than one per week. Indeed, US detection of the test of a Soviet submarine-launch missile had led to a Threat Assessment Conference just weeks before this event.
Given enough time to analyze the data, warning officers on duty would be able to sort out most false alarms. But the current system puts incredible time pressure on the decision process, giving warning officers and then more senior officials only a few minutes to assess the situation. If they decide the warning looks real, they would alert the president, who would have perhaps 10 minutes to decide whether to launch.

Keeping missiles on hair-trigger alert and requiring a decision within minutes of whether or not to launch is something like tailgating when you’re driving on the freeway. Leaving only a small distance between you and the car in front of you reduces the time you have to react. You may be able to get away with it for a while, but the longer you put yourself in that situation the greater the chance that some unforeseen situation, or combination of events, will lead to disaster.

In his book, William Perry makes a passionate case for taking missiles off alert:
“These stories of false alarms have focused a searing awareness of the immense peril we face when in mere minutes our leaders must make life-and-death decisions affecting the whole planet. Arguably, short decision times for response were necessary during the Cold War, but clearly those arguments do not apply today; yet we are still operating with an outdated system fashioned for Cold War exigencies.

“It is time for the United States to make clear the goal of removing all nuclear weapons everywhere from the prompt-launch status in which nuclear-armed ballistic missiles are ready to be launched in minutes.”

Provoking the Russian Bear: NATO Is “Cannon Fodder” for the American Empire

russia-nato

BALTOPS 16 is a military exercise now taking place between June 3 and June 18 in the Baltic Sea region which is in close proximity to Russia. The U.S. Naval Institute (www.usni.org) released an article titled ‘Analysis: Larger NATO Baltic Sea Exercise Sends Important Message to Russia’ stated what BALTOPS 16 will consist of:
Over the next three weeks BALTOPS 16 will draw together some 6,000 personnel, 45 warships, and 60 aircraft from 17 nations, including the United States, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, along with the littoral states of the Baltic States who are NATO members (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Denmark) or NATO partners (Sweden and Finland)
To make matters worse, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a military and intelligence organization mostly funded by the US government and the rest by the EU (technically paid for by taxpayers within the U.S. and the E.U.) is moving forward by placing missile defense systems in Romania, a reckless move that threatens Russia’s security. According to a recent CNN report “The United States launched a ground-based missile defense system earlier this month in Romania. The system is meant to defend Europe against rogue states like Iran and not intended to target Moscow’s missiles, Washington has said.” Iran is a threat to Europe? In 2014, Putin was asked about NATO’s American–made missile defense system placed in Europe to counter the Iranian threat: Here is the classic reaction from Putin:

This time, Washington’s willingness to use Romania to place its missile defense shield
supposedly against Iran’s nuclear threat is not a laughing matter to the Russian government. Putin warned European countries they are now in the “crosshairs” meaning European nations will be in the middle of a possible future conflict between Russia and the US-NATO alliance. Reuters reported Putin’s reaction in a news conference that took place in Athens, Greece with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Putin said “If yesterday in those areas of Romania people simply did not know what it means to be in the cross-hairs, then today we will be forced to carry out certain measures to ensure our security.”Putin did not leave out Poland’s participation regarding the deployment a missile defense system when he said “It will be the same case with Poland.” Polish Minister of Defense Antoni Macierewicz recently announced that NATO will place four battalions in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia to counter the Russian threat. Poland is also recruiting 35,000 new recruits for a paramilitary force to counter any Russian incursion on its territory.

Washington’s European vassal states are on the road to social, political and economic destruction. The European Union’s (EU) sanctions on Russia is one example on how farmers, working class people and various businesses are experiencing financial difficulties and even bankruptcy due to US-NATO’s reckless policies against Russia.

Washington’s move to place a new ground-based missile defense system in Romania with Poland’s recruitment drive and the BALTOPS 16 exercise will surely raise tensions with Russia which are at an all time high since the Cold War. Russia views this move as a threat to its security with NATO’s encirclement of Russia is as reckless and as dangerous as you can get in terms of escalating the possibility of a disastrous war.

The RAND Corporation Admits NATO Cannot Defeat Russian Forces

Russia is more than prepared to fight a war against NATO which would not last more than three days at best according to the Rand Corporation, a think tank based in Santa Monica, California. The Rand corporation employed well-known players in the political arena including war criminal Henry Kissinger as an advisor and George W. Bush-era Neocons such as Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld (former Chairman of the board 1981-1986 and again in 1995-1996) and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice who was a former intern and trustee. The RAND corporation report admitted that a NATO war against Russia would last between 36 and 60 hours although I personally think that NATO would not last more than 24 hours if an attack took place against the Russian Federation:
In a series of war games conducted between summer 2014 and spring 2015, the RAND Corporation examined the shape and probable outcome of a near-term Russian invasion of the Baltic states. The games’ findings are unambiguous: As currently postured, NATO cannot successfully defend the territory of its most exposed members. Across multiple games using a wide range of expert participants in and out of uniform playing both sides, the longest it has taken Russian forces to reach the outskirts of the Estonian and/or Latvian capitals of Tallinn and Riga, respectively, is 60 hours
If NATO were that foolish to start a war against Russia, European countries across Western Europe would be open to Russian missile strikes crippling Europe’s already fragile social and economic fabric. An attack on Russia would be the end of NATO, literally. Russia has capabilities that are far more advanced than what the U.S. and NATO forces have in their arsenal as independent geopolitical analyst and writer Pepe Escobar explains:
If push comes to nuclear shove, the S-400 and especially the S-500 anti-missile missiles would block all incoming US ICBMs, cruise missiles and stealth aircraft. Offensive drones would be blocked by drone defenses. The S-500 practically consigns to the dustbin stealth warplanes such as the F-22, F-35 and the B-2.
The bottom line is that Russia – in terms of hypersonic missile development – is about four generations ahead of the US, if we measure it by the development of the S-300, S-400 and S-500 systems. As a working hypothesis, we could describe the next system – already in the drawing boards – as the S-600. It would take the US military at least ten years to develop and roll out a new weapons system, which in military terms represents a generation. Every Pentagon planner worth his pension plan should know that
NATO is responsible for creating disasters in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Ukraine and the former Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was the start of NATO’s belligerence in the name of “humanitarian interventions” during what was known as the Kosovo War. NATO claimed that the Albanian population in Kosovo was persecuted by Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY) which was the state of the union between two republics (Serbia and Montenegro) of the former Yugoslavia which broke up in 1991. NATO sought authorization from the United Nations Security Council to proceed with military action but Russia and China opposed and threatened to veto the move. NATO went on to launch military strikes with Washington’s approval against the FRY without UN authorization and called it a“humanitarian intervention.” The FRY rightly called it an illegal war of aggression that resulted in more than 12,000 civilian deaths where the majority of victims were Albanians followed by Serbs, Roma and other ethnic groups. After the war in Yugoslavia, NATO began to see itself as a global military force and expanded beyond Europe (with Washington’s permission of course) into Central Asia, East and North Africa, the Middle East and even as far as the Indian Ocean.

The purpose for NATO is to carry out the American Empire’s dirty work which serves Washington’s strategy for dominating Eurasia. You can also call NATO “America’s Cannon Fodder in waiting” since they are at the frontline against Russia waiting to commit suicide.
Europe’s Refugee Crises and NATO’s Interventions in the Middle East and North Africa
The Pentagon utilizes NATO against its perceived enemies which have contributed to numerous geopolitical disasters including the most recent “humanitarian intervention” of Libya. The stupidity of NATO’s interventionist policies in Libya and now Syria resulted in a refugee crisis into the European Union with Libyans and Syrians leading the way. The refugee crisis is steering tensions among EU citizens who are angry at the refugees, but not at NATO“humanitarian interventions” in North Africa and the Middle East. One of the most absurd statements on the EU’s refugee crisis was by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander General Philip Breedlove which was reported by theFinancial Times on March 1st, 2016:
Asked at a Senate hearing whether Russia was aggravating the Syrian refugee crisis in order to divide countries in the EU, he replied: “I can’t find any other reason for them [air strikes against civilians] other than to cause refugees to be on the move and make them someone else’s problem.” He added: “I use the term weaponisation of immigration”
Russia is now accused of “Weaponising” immigrants by General Breedlove is absurd. Let’s take a closer look why immigrants are coming from the Middle East and North Africa in the first place. The majority of immigrants are coming from Syria and then there is Afghanistan, Kosovo, Libya, Albania, Mali and Somalia which experienced some form of US-NATO led “humanitarian interventions”. Then Eritrea and Nigeria were also nations contributing refugees to the European Union. The US government is responsible for creating the refugee crisis into Europe, not Russia. Let’s not forget what General Wesley Clark admitted to in 2007 in an interview with Amy Goodman of Democracy Nowwhen he was told by someone in the Pentagon that “We’re going to take out seven countries in 5 years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.”

The U.S. and its allies including Israel, Turkey and Saudi Arabia and other Gulf p
uppet states were all involved in creating the civil war in Syria in 2011 through a proxy opposition group to oust President Bashar al-Assad. The“protests” were orchestrated by a covert operation led by US-NATO-Israeli intelligence agencies to create chaos in order to fault the Syrian government through propaganda. Washington and Israel want to destabilize Syria as a Nation State and break-up Syria into several small nation-states easier for the governments of the U.S. and Israel to control. Israel’s interest in destabilizing Syria goes back decades, perhaps as far back when the State of Israel was declared a new independent state in 1948. However, in September 24, 2010 Wikileaks published an email sent to U.S. Presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton from Alec Ross, a Senior Advisor for Innovation to Clinton when she was Secretary of State titled ’1st known case of a successful social media campaign in Syria’, Ross wrote “When Jared and I went to Syria, it was because we knew that Syrian society was growing increasingly young (population will double in 17 years) and digital and that this was going to create disruptions in society that we could potential harness for our purposes.”It is evident that Washington had its designs on Syria before the 2011 protests occurred. Professor Michel Chossudovsky, Director and founder of Global Research published an article asking the question of who was actually behind the protests. The article titled ‘Five Years Ago: The US-NATO-Israel Sponsored Al Qaeda Insurgency in Syria. Who Was Behind The 2011 “Protest Movement”?’Stated the following facts on who was actually involved in the process:
From Day One, the Islamist “freedom fighters” were supported, trained and equipped by NATO and Turkey’s High Command. According to Israeli intelligence sources (Debka, August14, 2011):
NATO headquarters in Brussels and the Turkish high command are meanwhile drawing up plans for their first military step in Syria, which is to arm the rebels with weapons for combating the tanks and helicopters spearheading the Assad regime’s crackdown on dissent. … NATO strategists are thinking more in terms of pouring large quantities of anti-tank and anti-air rockets, mortars and heavy machine guns into the protest centers for beating back the government armored forces. (DEBKAfile, NATO to give rebels anti-tank weapons, August 14, 2011)
This initiative, which was also supported by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, involved a process of organized recruitment of thousands of jihadist “freedom fighters”, reminiscent of the enlistment of Mujahideen to wage the CIA’s jihad (holy war) in the heyday of the Soviet-Afghan war:
Also discussed in Brussels and Ankara, our sources report, is a campaign to enlist thousands of Muslim volunteers in Middle East countries and the Muslim world to fight alongside the Syrian rebels. The Turkish army would house these volunteers, train them and secure their passage into Syria. (Ibid, emphasis added) These mercenaries were subsequently integrated into US and allied sponsored terrorist organizations including Al Nusrah and ISIS. The Daraa “protest movement” on March 17-18 had all the appearances of a staged event involving covert support to Islamic terrorists by Mossad and/or Western intelligence
US-NATO’s “humanitarian intervention” in Libya was also part of Washington’s strategic goal. Removing President Muammar Gaddafi from power was to control Libya’s natural resources and for the Western powers to remain in the African Continent as a dominant force politically and economically. The West also wanted Africa to use its currencies instead of Gaddafi’s plan for the gold dinar. The West preferred their corporations and their special interest groups to exploit Libya’s natural resources and its gold reserves. Refugees are also coming from Kosovo (Is this where a statue of U.S. President of Bill Clinton is located?); Mali, Albania and several other countries where some sort of US-NATO involvement took place, but Washington and the main-stream media insist that Russia is to blame.

All of the countries just mentioned contributed to Europe’s refugee crisis leads us to conclude that it was the US government and its NATO patsies who intervened in one way or another that caused the crisis. Who believes General Breedlove’s nonsense? What is insane is that NATO’s interventions in the Middle East and North Africa affects Europe’s borders due to the EU’s new immigration policies which eventually puts a strain on the economy. The European taxpayers eventually end up paying for the housing, food and other benefits for the refugees.

US-NATO actions are the cause and effect due to its “humanitarian interventions.” Wars breed death and destruction. Wars also breed mass migrations of families who flee their war torn countries in search of safety and new economic opportunities to survive. NATO is truly sowing the seeds of destruction for Europe and the rest of the world. When will the European citizenry stop NATO’s irresponsible foreign interventions that are not only destroying Nation-states in various regions in the world, but their own territories as well? Maybe they should blame European politicians in Brussels that allowed this crisis to happen in the first place? Would that change anything? I doubt it; besides, NATO is just a gaggle of vassal states that are mainly controlled by American politicians, Wall Street, corporations and special interests groups located across the Atlantic Ocean.

Can NATO’s War against Russia be its Last War?

Russia will not attack NATO forces on its borders nor will they allow an attack on its territory by NATO forces even if it means launching its nuclear weapons to protect itself. An article published by Dmitry Orlov, editor and founder ofwww.cluborlov.blogspot.org with a collaboration of Russian scholars, authors and bloggers including Evgenia Gurevich, Ph.D.(http://thesaker.ru), Scientist Victor Katsap, PhD, Sr. (NuFlare Technology America, Inc), Andrei Kozhev, Serge Lubomudrov and the The Saker (A. Raevsky) titled ‘A Russian Warning’ starts with an introduction of their concerns regarding war against Russia and China by the US-NATO alliance:

We, the undersigned, are Russians living and working in the USA. We have been watching with increasing anxiety as the current US and NATO policies have set us on an extremely dangerous collision course with the Russian Federation, as well as with China
The article clearly states what the consequences of such a devastating war would be:
The US leadership has done everything it could to push the situation to the brink of disaster. First, its anti-Russian policies have convinced the Russian leadership that making concessions or negotiating with the West is futile. It has become apparent that the West will always support any individual, movement or government that is anti-Russian, be it tax-cheating Russian oligarchs, convicted Ukrainian war criminals, Saudi-supported Wahhabi terrorists in Chechnya or cathedral-desecrating punks in Moscow. Now that NATO, in violation of its previous promises, has expanded right up to the Russian border, with US forces deployed in the Baltic states, within artillery range of St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, the Russians have nowhere left to retreat. They will not attack; nor will they back down or surrender. The Russian leadership enjoys over 80% of popular support; the remaining 20% seems to feel that it is being too soft in opposing Western encroachment. But Russia will retaliate, and a provocation or a simple mistake could trigger a sequence of events that will end with millions of Americans dead and the US in ruins.
Unlike many Americans, who see war as an exciting, victorious foreign adventure, the Russians hate and fear war. But they are also ready for it, and they have been preparing for war for several years now. Their preparations have been most effective. Unlike the US, which squanders untold billions on dubious overpriced arms programs such as the F-35 joint task fighter, the Russians are extremely stingy with their defense rubles, getting as much as 10 times the bang for the buck compared to the bloated US defense industry. While it is true that the Russian economy has suffered from low energy prices, it is far from being in shambles, and a return to growth is expected as early as next year. Senator John McCain once called Russia “A gas station masquerading as a country.” Well, he lied. Yes, Russia is the world’s largest oil producer and second-largest oil exporter, but it is also world’s largest exporter of grain and nuclear power technology. It is as advanced and sophisticated a society as the United States. Russia’s armed forces, both conventional and nuclear, are now ready to fight, and they are more than a match for the US and NATO, especially if a war erupts anywhere near the Russian border
I agree with their assessment because the U.S. military would lose another war (they have lost several wars throughout their entire history). Not only because their war record signifies their losing streak, the U.S. does not have the strength, the advanced technology they claim they have (as in the case of the failed Air Force F-35 program which was flawed and cost more than a trillion dollars to produce), the moral authority or on the “Right Side” of history to start a war against Russia and China.

For Now, Washington (a bully in its own right) will continue to target smaller, weaker nations with their terrorists who they fund, train and manage in the Middle East and Africa. They will continue to destabilize governments through “regime change” in Latin America as they recently did in Brazil and are in the process of targeting Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia through their Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) or controlled “opposition groups” allied with Washington and Wall Street. The American Empire will continue to rape and pillage the planet’s resources; after all, the American Empire follows the typical patterns of past empires who committed similar crimes against humanity.

As for NATO forces on Russia’s borders, they would be destroyed in less than three days if they were foolish enough to follow Washington’s orders, then again Vassal states have no say in their own foreign or domestic affairs in the first place. NATO is a willing participant waiting for its annihilation as they sacrifice their lives and their nations in a war against Russia not for Europe, but for the American Empire.

The US military’s approach in Europe is aimed at boosting control of EU and NATO allies and to isolate Russia, political author Diana Johnstone said.

Last week, the international naval exercise BALTOPS kicked off in the Baltic Sea and will continue until June 19. BALTOPS is an annual military exercise, held and sponsored by US Naval Forces Europe in the Baltic Sea and the surrounding regions since 1971.

This year, approximately 6,100 troops from 17 countries along with 45 submarines and warships, including the USS Mount Whitney, and over 60 aircraft are taking part in one of the largest drills in northern Europe.

NATO has been conducting the exercise for several decades, but now the pretext has changed, Johnstone told RT.

"The line has changed now, because the US is coming right out with their aggressive actions toward Russia. You have to see the political, economic and military motives for this," she pointed out.
In political terms, the drills are aimed at strengthening the US’ control of EU and NATO countries and isolating Russia.

She added that despite the fact that the general public in Europe is protesting the drills the governments of the countries involved are ignoring this.

"This is destroying defense [capabilities] of Europe. It is just turning into an instrument of US policy," she said.

The author also said that NATO should adopt a non-aggressive stance towards Russia, instead of threatening Russia with a response for Crimea’s reunification.

"It is totally absurd. Obviously there is nothing offensive about the people of Crimea going back to Russia, to which they belonged before… There is not one tiny bit of an aggressive move of Russia towards the West," she said.

NATO drills in Poland undermine trust, security: Kremlin

A senior Russian official says the ongoing military exercises conducted by NATO in Poland and other European countries do not contribute to an atmosphere of trust and security across Europe.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the remarks in Moscow, a day after the US-led western military alliance launched their biggest-ever joint exercise in Poland.

"In any case, the military drills, which are based on legends about a quite unambiguous indication in an understandable way, definitely, do not contribute to the atmosphere of trust and security," Peskov said during a news briefing on Tuesday.

Also on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov strongly denounced the ongoing military drills by NATO in Eastern Europe, threatening to take measures to respond to increased activity by the Western military bloc near its borders. Lavrov also noted that he saw no threats in the Baltic region that would justify the area's militarization by the US and its allies.

Russia’s Ambassador to NATO Alexander Grushko recently said that NATO’s plan for more deployments in Poland and the Baltic states “changes the regional situation in the sphere of security qualitatively.”

The US-led military coalition has begun 10-day exercises, involving some 31,000 troops from Poland, the US, and several other NATO nations. Military preparedness and cooperation between allied commands and troops are expected to be tested during the drills.
The largest contingent of about 14,000 soldiers was sent by the United States to take part in the maneuver.

Around 3,000 vehicles, 105 aircraft and 12 naval vessels will also be involved in the drills.
The exercises are being held just weeks before a planned summit by NATO in the polish capital, Warsaw, that is expected to decide on whether to significantly increase NATO troop and equipment deployments to bases in Poland and the Baltic states.

Senior officials in Moscow have repeatedly accused NATO of seeking confrontation, describing its military buildup as a threat to security in Europe.

Russia has also criticized NATO’s expansionist policy to include countries in the Western Balkan region, saying the move directly harms Russia’s strategic interests in the area.

NATO has stepped up its military build-up near Russia’s borders since it suspended all ties with Moscow in April 2014 after the Black Sea Crimean Peninsula re-integrated into the Russian Federation following a referendum.

More than 20,000 people will participate in massive 'doomsday' drill to practice readiness for 9.0 magnitude mega-quake that could unleash a killer tsunami along Pacific Northwest

  • US military and state and local emergency responders will practice readiness drill to prepare to minimize loss of life if 9.0 mega-quake hits

  • Studies have forecast that while 1,100 people could die from a 9.0 magnitude quake, 13,500 could perish from the tsunami

  • Drill is scheduled June 7-10 with more than 20,000 people participating

  • The drill will focus on Cascadia Subduction Zone that on average produces magnitude 9.0 quakes every 500 years

More than 20,000 people will participate in a massive 'doomsday' drill to practice readiness in case of a Pacific Northwest 9.0 magnitude mega-quake that could unleash a killer tsunami.

The readiness drill is planned to test how well the US military and state and local emergency responders will work together to minimize loss of life and damages when a mega-quake rips along the Pacific Northwest and unleashes a killer tsunami.

During the second week of June the drill that has been developed by the US government, the military, and state and local emergency managers over the past few years, will be rehearsed.

The June 7-10 exercise called Cascadia Rising is named after the Cascadia Subduction Zone, a 600-mile-long fault just off the coast that runs from Northern California to British Columbia.

'This is the largest exercise ever for a Cascadia break,' said Lt Col Clayton Braun of the Washington State National Guard. Braun has been a key planner of the doomsday drill, which is being overseen by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The 20,000 people that will be involved in the disaster drill will represent various federal agencies, the US military, state and local emergency response managers across the Pacific Northwest, Native American tribes and emergency management officials in British Columbia.

Awareness of the seismic threat looming just off the Pacific Northwest dates back to the 1980s, when researchers concluded that coastal lands long ago had been inundated by a tsunami.

Research also indicated that a tsunami that was documented in Japan in January 1700 originated from the Cascadia Subduction Zone, also known as the CSZ.

On average the CSZ produces magnitude 9.0 quakes every 500 years, but big quakes have been separated by as few as 200 years and as many as 1,000.

So it is impossible to predict when the next monster quake occurs. However, tectonic stresses have been accumulating in the CSZ for more than 300 years and seismologists say it could rupture at any time.

More than 8 million people live in the area that is vulnerable to the Cascadia Subduction Zone. It contains the most heavily populated areas of the Pacific Northwest, including Seattle and Portland, as well as Interstate 5, one of the nation's busiest roads.

Coastal towns are especially at risk. Studies have forecast that while 1,100 people could die from a 9.0 magnitude quake, 13,500 could perish from the tsunami that would slam into the coast within 15 to 30 minutes after the shaking begins.

A scenario document written in preparation for Cascadia Rising exercise states: 'The scale of fatalities across the coast may overwhelm the resources of local governments.'

Whole towns along the coast may disappear. Hospitals could either collapse or be too severely damaged to handle casualties.

All across the region between the Pacific and the Cascade Range, bridges and roads could be destroyed, fuel supplies and communications disrupted, and buildings and crucial infrastructure may sink into soil that's been liquefied by the intense shaking.

The region has taken steps over the last few years to better prepare for the looming calamity.

Schools are being moved out of tsunami inundation zones. Money is being allocated for seismic retrofits of crucial structures. Tsunami evacuation routes to high ground have been identified.

Some of the exercise will put boots on the ground. For example, Washington State National Guardsmen will conduct a landing on Vashon Island to rehearse delivery of supplies with landing craft.

About 2,300 National Guard soldiers are among the 6,000 or so exercise participants in Washington state.

Another major drill rehearses how to get the Port of Tacoma back into operation after it has been devastated by a quake, using a US Army Reserve pier that consists of a logistics support vessel, a barge derrick crane and a large tug.

In Oregon, about 580 National Guard soldiers are among some 1,400 Cascadia Rising participants from across the state.

Specialty teams will practice their roles for the disaster that will come. This includes pulling people out of a pile of rubble that simulates a collapsed building and triaging them for medical care.

Much of Cascadia Rising will entail civilian agencies and the military coordinating in what will be extremely difficult conditions.

Participants in the exercise will contact emergency management offices with reports of specific needs during the simulated disaster. It will be up to agencies to work together to come up with solutions.
Amateur radio operators are also participating in Cascadia Rising.

If internet and phone service are severed, ham operators have the ability to act as the eyes, ears and messengers for emergency officials scrambling to figure out what they need to do to save lives and prevent more damage.
The region's ham radio operators are even able to establish email service for emergency management officials, using amateur radio frequencies to bridge the gaps.

'We can leapfrog over the outage, to where there is still internet activity,' said Bruce Bjerke, Oregon section coordinator for Amateur Radio Emergency Services, a national non-governmental organization.

Regional and local emergency managers are welcoming the opportunity to rehearse a Cascadia calamity.
'The Cascadia is relatively new to us,' said Tiffany Brown, emergency manager for Clatsop County, the northernmost county on the Oregon coast. 'We're behind in terms of getting ready for it.'

Earthquake

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake occurred in Indonesia, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said on Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The epicenter of the quake was located 132 kilometers (82 miles) southwest of the city Leksula, at a depth of 428 kilometers (266 miles), according to the agency.
There have been neither immediate reports of damages or casualties,. nor a tsunami threat.
Indonesia is located in the so-called Ring of Fire quake zone, where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. Earlier this week, a strong 6.5 earthquake occurred in South Sumatra, a province on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 shook parts of Taiwan on Tuesday and was felt in the capital, Taipei, residents and officials said, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
The US Geological Survey originally recorded the quake, centered about 110 km (70 miles) northeast of Taipei, with a magnitude of 6.1. Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau put the magnitude at 7.2.

Seismotectonics of the Philippine Sea and Vicinity

The Philippine Sea plate is bordered by the larger Pacific and Eurasia plates and the smaller Sunda plate. The Philippine Sea plate is unusual in that its borders are nearly all zones of plate convergence. The Pacific plate is subducted into the mantle, south of Japan, beneath the Izu-Bonin and Mariana island arcs, which extend more than 3,000 km along the eastern margin of the Philippine Sea plate. This subduction zone is characterized by rapid plate convergence and high-level seismicity extending to depths of over 600 km. In spite of this extensive zone of plate convergence, the plate interface has been associated with few great (M>8.0) ‘megathrust’ earthquakes. This low seismic energy release is thought to result from weak coupling along the plate interface (Scholz and Campos, 1995). These convergent plate margins are also associated with unusual zones of back-arc extension (along with resulting seismic activity) that decouple the volcanic island arcs from the remainder of the Philippine Sea Plate (Karig et al., 1978; Klaus et al., 1992).
South of the Mariana arc, the Pacific plate is subducted beneath the Yap Islands along the Yap trench. The long zone of Pacific plate subduction at the eastern margin of the Philippine Sea Plate is responsible for the generation of the deep Izu-Bonin, Mariana, and Yap trenches as well as parallel chains of islands and volcanoes, typical of circum-pacific island arcs. Similarly, the northwestern margin of the Philippine Sea plate is subducting beneath the Eurasia plate along a convergent zone, extending from southern Honshu to the northeastern coast of Taiwan, manifested by the Ryukyu Islands and the Nansei-Shoto (Ryukyu) trench. The Ryukyu Subduction Zone is associated with a similar zone of back-arc extension, the Okinawa Trough. At Taiwan, the plate boundary is characterized by a zone of arc-continent collision, whereby the northern end of the Luzon island arc is colliding with the buoyant crust of the Eurasia continental margin offshore China.
Along its western margin, the Philippine Sea plate is associated with a zone of oblique convergence with the Sunda Plate. This highly active convergent plate boundary extends along both sides the Philippine Islands, from Luzon in the north to the Celebes Islands in the south. The tectonic setting of the Philippines is unusual in several respects: it is characterized by opposite-facing subduction systems on its east and west sides; the archipelago is cut by a major transform fault, the Philippine Fault; and the arc complex itself is marked by active volcanism, faulting, and high seismic activity. Subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate occurs at the eastern margin of the archipelago along the Philippine Trench and its northern extension, the East Luzon Trough. The East Luzon Trough is thought to be an unusual example of a subduction zone in the process of formation, as the Philippine Trench system gradually extends northward (Hamburger et al., 1983). On the west side of Luzon, the Sunda Plate subducts eastward along a series of trenches, including the Manila Trench in the north, the smaller less well-developed Negros Trench in the central Philippines, and the Sulu and Cotabato trenches in the south (Cardwell et al., 1980). At its northern and southern terminations, subduction at the Manila Trench is interrupted by arc-continent collision, between the northern Philippine arc and the Eurasian continental margin at Taiwan and between the Sulu-Borneo Block and Luzon at the island of Mindoro. The Philippine fault, which extends over 1,200 km within the Philippine arc, is seismically active. The fault has been associated with major historical earthquakes, including the destructive M7.6 Luzon earthquake of 1990 (Yoshida and Abe, 1992). A number of other active intra-arc fault systems are associated with high seismic activity, including the Cotabato Fault and the Verde Passage-Sibuyan Sea Fault (Galgana et al., 2007).
Relative plate motion vectors near the Philippines (about 80 mm/yr) is oblique to the plate boundary along the two plate margins of central Luzon, where it is partitioned into orthogonal plate convergence along the trenches and nearly pure translational motion along the Philippine Fault (Barrier et al., 1991). Profiles B and C reveal evidence of opposing inclined seismic zones at intermediate depths (roughly 70-300 km) and complex tectonics at the surface along the Philippine Fault.
Several relevant tectonic elements, plate boundaries and active volcanoes, provide a context for the seismicity presented on the main map. The plate boundaries are most accurate along the axis of the trenches and more diffuse or speculative in the South China Sea and Lesser Sunda Islands. The active volcanic arcs (Siebert and Simkin, 2002) follow the Izu, Volcano, Mariana, and Ryukyu island chains and the main Philippine islands parallel to the Manila, Negros, Cotabato, and Philippine trenches.
Seismic activity along the boundaries of the Philippine Sea Plate (Allen et al., 2009) has produced 7 great (M>8.0) earthquakes and 250 large (M>7) events. Among the most destructive events were the 1923 Kanto, the 1948 Fukui and the 1995 Kobe (Japan) earthquakes (99,000, 5,100, and 6,400 casualties, respectively), the 1935 and the 1999 Chi-Chi (Taiwan) earthquakes (3,300 and 2,500 casualties, respectively), and the 1976 M7.6 Moro Gulf and 1990 M7.6 Luzon (Philippines) earthquakes (7,100 and 2,400 casualties, respectively). There have also been a number of tsunami-generating events in the region, including the Moro Gulf earthquake, whose tsunami resulted in more than 5000 deaths.

The CDC, World Health Organization and other groups warn that it's only a matter of time before people start becoming infected with ultimate superbugs that cannot be killed by any antibiotics.
It was a Friday in mid-May, and Erik Snesrud was checking out the first batch of samples under a new directive.
The order had just come in to look for a new gene called mcr-1 that had already achieved global notoriety among microbiologists. It gives germs the ability to withstand the effects of colistin, a last-resort antibiotic used to save the lives of people infected with serious superbugs.

The sample was loaded into one of the super-fast gene sequencers at the lab inside the bowels of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The small team at the Multidrug Resistant Organism Repository and Surveillance Network (MRSN) lab specializes in testing germs for antibiotic resistance, which has become the scourge of hospitals all over the world.
The results were back in minutes. One of the samples — some E. coli bacteria taken from a woman with a urinary tract infection in Pennsylvania — carried the gene.
Snesrud knew he was going to lose his weekend. He prepared to work for the next 48 hours. "We wanted to know what we were dealing with," he said.
The news startled doctors across the country. Center for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Thomas Frieden upstaged his own speech about Zika virus last week to warn about what the arrival of mcr-1 means for people everywhere. "The medicine cabinet is empty for some patients. It is the end of the road for antibiotics unless we act urgently," he said.

Snesrud, however, wasn't shocked. Once bacteria acquire new characteristics, they generally do get around quickly. The mcr-1 gene had been identified in food animals and people around the world going back for decades. But never before in the United States.
"Everything was going so fast. It was 'Oh, my God,'" said Patrick McGann, chief of molecular research for the MRSN.
"We got it Friday. We were done Monday afternoon."
Snesrud's colleague, Rosslyn Maybank, stayed late that Friday, setting up the giant PacBio sequencing machine that can read out the entire genome of microbes and tell researchers not only what genes can be found in an organism, but where they are.
"We were looking for where the gene was located," said the quiet and seemingly unflappable Snesrud.

Patrick McGann of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research shows off one of the super-fest gene sequencers that helped his team track down a superbug with an "ultimate" resistance gene called mcr-1.

"Was it on the plasmid? Was it in the chromosome?" It was, as expected, on the plasmid — the worst of the two places.
Plasmids are little structures of DNA that exist outside the chromosomes where most of the DNA is found. They're handy little carriers that can pass off a stretch of DNA as easily as a courier hands an envelope to a client.
Bacteria can acquire resistance to antibiotics in several ways. They can evolve it naturally, through mutations. Or they can share them with one another through what's known as horizontal gene transfer.
They exchange the plasmid through bacterial sex, often through structures called pili. "They create a little channel and they pass the DNA through it," McGann said. First, however, they make a copy for themselves, so they can also pass that DNA down to their own daughter cells.
Plasmids come in different types, also, said McGann. He likens them to cars. "Is it a really fast one, like a Ferrari, or is it like a Skoda?" And plasmids don't respect species distinctions, so bacteria can pass them to different species of bacteria — as if a cat gave some of its genes to a dog, for instance.
It also means doctors don't have to be on the lookout for something as simple as a methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureas (MRSA) infection. They need to watch for a MRSA that's grabbed some genes from, for example, a type of superbug called a carbapenem-resistant enterococcus or CRE. CRE are the germs that Frieden calls "nightmare bacteria."

Some of the 40,000 samples of bacteria stored at the Multidrug Resistant Organism Repository and Surveillance Network (MRSN) lab at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Silver Spring, Md.

In this particular sample, the plasmid was one that can get from one germ to another very quickly. "It was definitely up there with the Lexus or the BMW," said the chatty, Irish-born McGann.
"We are very concerned to see it in there with this particular plasmid." Making matters worse, the plasmid was carried by E. coli, itself a highly contagious germ. And this particular E. coli already had superbug characteristics, even before it picked up the new mcr-1 gene.
It has seven of its own resistance genes, permanently encoded in the DNA of its chromosomes. Then it has seven more on the plasmid.
One piece of good news: the E. coli wasn't invincible — yet. It could be killed with a class of antibiotics called carbapenems. The patient, a 49-year-old woman who hasn't been identified, was treated with intravenous antibiotics and as now home and well, said Dr. Mary Hinkle, an expert in antibiotic resistance who works on the MRSN team.
CDC and state health officials are helping track down everyone the patient had been in contact with, in hopes of finding where and how she got it.
The big fear is that a CRE will acquire the mcr-1 gene. A patient infected with such a bug would have very little hope of treatment.

From left, Rosslyn Maybank, Ana Ong and Erik Snesrud of the Multidrug Resistant Organism Repository and Surveillance Network (MRSN) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research worked overtime to identify the first sample for a U.S. patient carrying the mcr-1 antibiotic resistance gene. Maggie Fox / NBC News

Another piece of good news: The MRSN team has not yet found another example of the mcr-1 gene in any of the samples they have tested. "We have tested about another 40 of them so far. There's no sign of it since," McGann said.
They are painstakingly going through 40,000 samples of bacteria they have stored in freezers in their labs inside the main blue and yellow building of the Walter Reed annex in Silver Spring, a suburb of Washington, D.C.
Super-fast sequencers developed in the 15 years since the first human genome was mapped help a lot. What used to take weeks or months can now be done in a matter of hours.
A strong work ethic doesn't hurt, either. Snesrud went two days on little or no sleep; Maybank worked extra hours standing on her feet even though she's eight months pregnant.
"We pride ourselves on our turnaround time," McGann said.
There aren't many rewards — no overtime, no big bonuses for these government employees. But there are some perks. Snesrud's getting one of the ultimate honors for a microbiologist — a new species named after him. The team has proposed calling it Pseudomonas snesrudii. It was taken from someone's skin in Baltimore.

Patrick McGann of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research displays a culture of multiple drug resistant E coli taken from a Pennsylvania patient. Maggie Fox / NBC News

The lab tests samples from around the world, not only from U.S. military hospitals but from Israel, France's Institut Pasteur and elsewhere, McGann said.
"They say, 'Hey, we have an E.coli here. It's weird. Can you guys check it out?'" said McGann.
The hope is to catch and stop outbreaks of dangerous new pathogens fast.
"It's very important to spot these guys coming in early," says McGann.
One outbreak the team thinks they could have stopped sooner was the spread of a drug-resistant strain of Acinetobacter baumanii that caused an eight-year-long outbreak among servicemembers starting in Iraq in 2002.
A baumanii was known for causing horrible wound infections among soldiers in the Vietnam War. The normally harmless bacteria, found in soil and on skin, got into the wounds of men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, causing baffling bloodstream infections.
"If this lab had existed 15 years ago, we would have been able to provide feedback ... so we could make much smarter choices," Hinkle said.

The team would have been able to sequence the samples quickly and tell military doctors which antibiotic to use, and which patients to isolate so the bug didn't spread.
Instead, doctors were forced to try one antibiotic after another and had no idea that certain patients were more dangerous than others. Each one failed.
In the end, it was colistin that worked. That's one reason the team's so concerned to see mcr-1 and its properties that make colistin useless, too.
The CDC, World Health Organization and other groups warn that it's only a matter of time before people start becoming infected with ultimate superbugs that cannot be killed by any of the antibiotics in the arsenal.

Patrick McGann of the Multidrug Resistant Organism Repository and Surveillance Network (MRSN) lab at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research points to the screen of a Pacific Biosciences PacBio sequencer used to help sequence the genome of a sample of E. coli bacteria that turned out to carry the dreaded mcr-1 resistance gene. Maggie Fox / NBC News

President Barack Obama has directed government agencies to get busy working on a solution, and the MRSN team at Walter Reed in part of that effort. Other labs in the large blue complex are working to develop antibiotics that will bypass all the known resistance mechanisms, and kill even the worst superbugs.
So are academic centers and a few drug companies, although not as many as experts would like to see. And drug development takes years.
In the meantime, the MRSN team is acting as one of the first lines of defense, trying to catch dangerous superbug infections before they can cause outbreaks.

‘It can’t go unanswered’: Russia will respond to NATO buildup near its borders, senior diplomat says

The increase in the NATO military presence in the vicinity of Russia’s borders will not go unanswered, Deputy Foreign Minister Aleksey Meshkov has said at an international conference in Moscow.
The Russian side has repeatedly stated that the buildup of the NATO military presence near Russian borders violates the spirit of the basic Russia-NATO pact and cannot be left unanswered by our country,” the diplomat said on Monday at the conference organized by the Russian-Italian Chamber of Commerce.
We are bound to secure the safety of our state,” Meshkov added.
The comments came soon after NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg spoke at Warsaw University, where he said that the bloc planned to station even more military forces in Europe.
Our military planners have put forward proposals for several battalions in different countries in the region. … This enhanced forward presence, combined with the ability to deploy NATO forces quickly, will send a clear message. An attack on Poland — or any other ally — will trigger a response from the entire alliance,” the NATO chief said.
In March this year, Russia’s envoy to NATO, Aleksandr Grushko, promised a “totally asymmetrical” response if the alliance stands by a plan to deploy new armored units to Eastern Europe. “We are not passive observers, we consistently take all the military measures we consider necessary in order to counterbalance this reinforced presence that is not justified by anything,” the diplomat said. “Certainly, we’ll respond totally asymmetrically,” he added.
In early May, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu announced plans to deploy two new divisions in the west of the country and one in the south to counterbalance NATO's increased military presence near Russian borders.
The Defense Ministry is taking a number of measures to respond to the NATO military buildup at the Russian border,” Shoigu told reporters. “Before the year's end, two new divisions will be formed in the Western Military District and one in the Southern Military District.”

Russia is alarmed at NATO’s continuing expansion in Eastern Europe and the Baltics, the Kremlin's spokesman has said, adding that Moscow will act to safeguard its interests and security but will do this in a “predictable and systematic way.”
NATO-Russia relations are “quickly rolling back” to that of the Cold War era because of outdated NATO rhetoric, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
The Cold War rhetoric is embedded so deep within the alliance that "we were mistaken in thinking it was a thing of the past," he added.

“NATO is a product of the time of confrontation. It is an instrument created for confrontation. What contribution it can make to ensuring European stability and security is disputable,” Peskov told journalists on Monday.
“We are still alarmed over the expansion of NATO presence and the bloc's ongoing enlargement towards our borders. This is a source of concern for Moscow and is the reason for a series of predictable, systematic and consecutive steps which Moscow is taking to safeguard its security interests under the current circumstances,” Peskov said.

The statement from the Kremlin spokesman comes after the head of NATO said that the alliance is ready to repel aggression against one of its members in Eastern Europe.
“The signal of having a multinational presence sends a very clear signal… that an attack on one ally would be an attack on the whole alliance,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told reporters on May 21.

"Some allies, namely the US, UK and Germany, have already declared the willingness to strengthen the Eastern flank,"Stoltenberg said.
Last week at a pre-ministerial press conference, the NATO secretary general said that the NATO military buildup on the territory of Eastern European countries is a response to “Russian aggression in Ukraine.”

“I strongly believe that those in Moscow understand that in the long run they will gain more from cooperating with NATO and the European Union and the West than confronting us,” Stoltenberg said, adding that the alliance’s approach to Russia strikes “a balance between military strength, determination, deterrence and political dialogue.”
“We have tripled the size of the NATO Response Force and we have created a new High Readiness Force and now we are moving forward with increased forward presence in the eastern part of the alliance,” he said.

Report Finds Growing Risk of Nuclear War Between United States and China

Military Solutions Won’t Resolve the Conflict Between the Two Countries
WASHINGTON (May 23, 2016)—A report released today by the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) concludes the risk of nuclear war between the United States and China is mounting. The report, titled “The Risk of Nuclear War with China: A Troubling Lack of Urgency,” notes that “the governments of the United States and the People’s Republic of China are a few poor decisions away from starting a war that could escalate rapidly and end in a nuclear exchange.” It concludes that neither side is likely to prevail by embarking on an arms race reminiscent of the Cold War.

“Lack of mutual trust and a growing sense that their differences may be irreconcilable are pushing both governments to look for military solutions,”  said report author, Gregory Kulacki, China Project manager for the UCS Global Security Program. “But there is no military solution to the security dilemma facing the two countries.”

The new report comes on the eve of President Obama’s historic trip to Hiroshima, the site where the United States first used a nuclear weapon. Obama’s visit will raise questions about his nuclear arms control legacy and how his administration’s policies toward Asia are affecting the region.
Disputes between the United States and China over navigation in East Asian waters and policies toward Taiwan and elsewhere are among the unresolved points of contention. Meanwhile, strengthened U.S. military relations with Japan and others in the region have raised Chinese concerns. These diplomatic splits have prompted both governments to develop new military strategies and upgrade their conventional and nuclear forces to prepare for a potential U.S.-China conflict.

“As long as both sides remain committed to pursuing technical solutions to the problems that divide them,” said Kulacki, “they are condemned to continue competing indefinitely.”

Both China and the United States are developing advanced technical capabilities, including anti-satellite weapons, missile defenses and conventional precision-guided munitions, which could undermine strategic stability. According to the report, miscommunication, misunderstanding, and poor judgment in the fog of a rapidly escalating conventional conflict could precipitate an intentional or accidental use of nuclear weapons by either side.

The report recommends both governments acknowledge the growing risk of military conflict and invest more time and effort pursuing diplomatic solutions to the problems that divide them. The ongoing dialog between the two countries have been focused on managing military competition instead of addressing its underlying causes.

“The result is a stalemate that is not a stable outcome; rather, it is a perpetual high-wire act,” said Kulacki, who has been following the bilateral dialog on nuclear weapons policy for many years. “And that stalemate may not be enough to prevent the unthinkable—a nuclear exchange.”

Russian and Chinese warplanes have become one of the major concerns of US Air Force commanders, says one of the force’s top combat officers.
“Our concern is a resurgent Russia and a very, very aggressive China,” Air Force General Herbert Carlisle was quoted by the USA Today as saying on Sunday.
The commander said that both Beijing and Moscow were intent on keeping the US out of their sphere of influence – Russia in Eastern Europe and China in the South China Sea.
“Their intent is to get us not to be there, so that the influence in those international spaces is controlled only by them,” Carlisle said. “My belief is that we cannot allow that to happen.”
The comments come amid a surge in intercepts of US warplanes by Chinese and Russian fighter jets.
On May 17, two Chinese J-11 warplanes intercepted a US Navy EP-3 Aries spy plane over the South China Sea.
A US RC-135 spy aircraft was buzzed by a Russian Sukhoi Su-27 over the Baltic Sea on April 29, when the Russian fighter came within about 30 meters (100 feet) of the American plane and performed a “barrel roll” over it.
On April 21, a Soviet-era Mig-31, which is known as the world’s fastest supersonic jet, intercepted a a US Navy P-8 spy plane over Russia’s Far East.
The incident occurred days after two Russian Sukhoi Su-24 warplanes performed “simulated attack” passes over the USS Donald Cook destroyer in the Baltic Sea, prompting harsh reactions from US Secretary of State John Kerry who called the move “reckless” and “provocative,” saying the US had every right to shoot the planes down.
“Any accident that occurs while the US military is playing cat and mouse with Russian or Chinese forces could escalate into a real fight,” said Loren Thompson, a defense industry consultant and military analyst at the Lexington Institute. “If it does, American victory is not assured, because US forces are operating thousands of miles from home and the other side is near its main bases.”

News Link: http://www.presstv.com/Detail/2016/05/21/466749/Russia-NATO--Montenegro-China-US-Obama-Putin

Press TV has interviewed Mike Billington, from the Asia Desk of the Executive Intelligence Review in Leesburg, about Russia condemning NATO for granting membership to Montenegro.

The following is a rough transcription of the interview.

Press TV: It is pretty much obvious that the NATO members will ratify the accession of Montenegro. What does it mean to have Montenegro as a member of NATO?

Billington: It is just one small step actually but the process has been going on since the fall of the Soviet Union. This is well-known, at the time Mr. and Mrs. LaRouche, my organization put forward the idea for a New Silk Road to connect Europe and Asia through Russia and thereby bringing Eastern Europe and Russia up economically into collaboration with us on the building of a common aims of mankind approach to the world, this was accepted by the Chinese but it was ..., the Russians were in a crisis stage at that point but the Europeans absolutely rejected it and instead chose to begin the process of moving NATO right up to Russia’s border, creating a new enemy image in the Russians and to primarily prevent the kind of proposal that the LaRouche has put forward which is uniting the Eurasian nations - Europe, Russia and China - around development.

This was seen as an enemy. This was seen as the threat to the power of the London, New York financial institutions and that has now come full swing. We are at a point where not only is NATO moving up to Russia’s border but we are watching the most massive deployment of military forces by Obama with the British running this show right up to the Russian border preparing for the World War III, this is recognized in Russia as a preparation for World War III, then Montenegro is just one next step in a long process which is escalating towards an explosion which could happen as early as this summer.

They are very, very upset not about Putin in Ukraine, as they say, but about Putin in Syria where he exposed the fact that the West was allied with the Saudis in funding and arming terrorists and Putin demonstrated you could defeat terrorism if you cut off the supply line from Obama’s friends in Saudi Arabia and Turkey and so forth and in the last week, by the way, Putin has intervened very forcefully into Asia and the Obama encirclement of China with military forces and the Philippines efforts to get ballistic missiles in Korea has been given a severe blow by the fact that Putin and Prime Minister Abe from Japan have established an extremely ambitious agreement for the development of the Russian Far East moving towards the settlement of the World War II territorial issues and pulling the plug on Obama’s use of Japan as a military ally, as they like to call it, against China.

And as you probably know Putin is hosting the Southeast Asian countries in Sochi again on the basis of what they call a strategic alliance for the common good and it is this idea of a common good against the geopolitics of the British and the Americans, the bloc mentality, the alliance’s mentality. No, let’s build the world jointly. This is what is seen as the enemy to the Obama, British war machine is to stop this emergence of the BRICS, the New International Development Banks that they are putting together and to effectively enforce a breakdown policy.

US needs war: the more terrible, the better

Washington has to constantly create an enemy image given tight dependence of the economy on military industrial complex.

As Strategic Culture Foundation's author Finian Cunningham wrote, attempts to present Russia as a threat are absurd, but the US power elite should somehow justify 600bln dollars weapons expenditures each year.

The journalist noted in his article that the military industrial complex has really become a 'defining feature' of the American society and economy, as the president Dwight Eisenhower warned in 1961.

He stated that for the latest years, defence budget of the US made up about 600bln dollars a year, that is more than a half of all the discretionary spending of the government and over a third of world military spending.

Cunningham pointed out that the 'American free-market capitalism' has become an oxymoron taking into account that the country's economy is totally dependent on government-funded militarism.

According to him, 'if the US military budget were somehow drastically reduced in line with other nations, the all-powerful military-industrial complex and the American state as we know it would collapse'.

Thus the US officials escalate relations with Russia and deploy the air defence base in Romania to maintain high-level military spendings. The US missile allow to carry out the 'first strike' against Russia. 'The US protestations of innocent intentions towards Russia are a contemptible insult to common sense,' the journalist concluded. 'Washington is quadrupling its military spending in Europe, increasing its troops, tanks, fighter jets, warships and war exercises on Russia's borders on the explicit basis of 'deterring Russian aggression.'

In this context it's silly and naive to believe that the air defence is directed not against Moscow.

Russia and China buy tons of gold getting ready for dollar collapse 17.05.2016

Russia and China buy gold to get rid of the weakening dollar. The weakening of the US dollar will become even more noticeable. Increasing their gold reserves, Moscow and Beijing make their economies stronger, the Spanish newspaper El Pais wrote.

According to the publication, central banks of Russia and China have been buying a lot of gold recently. During the past 15 months China has increased its gold reserves by 70% to 1,700 tons, becoming the world's sixth country with largest reserves of gold. Russia's gold reserves have grown by 21 percent to 1,460 tons.

During the crisis, the price of gold grows, El Pais says. Demand for gold remains stable. From 2009 to 2015, China was buying 6-8 tons of gold a month, but in the summer of 2015, the country doubled its appetite for the precious metal.

Russia started buying gold in 2015, increasing purchases against the backdrop of falling oil prices.

Countries buy gold in order to weaken their dependence on the dollar, Professor Carlos Fernandez at the Institute of Stock Research believes. According to him, China and Russia have debts in dollars, so the countries want to feel more secure by buying gold.

Pravda.Ru has reported before that Bank of Russia took the lead in becoming the world's largest buyer of gold. Russia's gold and currency reserves have grown by $3 billion to $368 billion.

"This is a quiet attack on the almighty dollar. Russian President Putin buys a lot of gold without attracting much attention to it. As long as political circles fear a new cold war between Moscow and the West, this war has already erupted in the financial sector," Germany's Die Welt wrote.

According to German economists, Putin is trying to undermine the power of the United State and Europe. Those who buy gold stand in the way for Western currencies in their global domination. This is a part of Putin's plan for world domination, economists say.

Noteworthy, Want China Times reported with reference to Duowei News that China's enormous gold reserves may crush the US currency." The publications also said that Russia had doubled its gold reserves since 2005.

REVEALED: The terrifying prospect of nuclear war in Europe

THE terrifying scenario of a nuclear war in 2016 has been revealed in a sobering map.
SOBERING: The US nuke targets in the Cold War have been released

By Rory McKeown /

The Future of Life Institute has demonstrated how catastrophic a nuclear exchange between the US and Russia could be using recently declassified data.

It has pinpointed each nuclear target the US had locked on to from 1956 – a staggering 1,100 of them at country’s in the east.

Tensions between east and west remain at their highest since the Cold War – with RAF fighter jets regularly intercepting Russian military aircraft in Europe.

DEADLY: Millions would be killed in Europe if nukes were dropped

TARGETS: All 1,100 nuclear bomb targets in Europe

The information has been compiled using the declassified list of US nuclear targets published by the National Security Archives.

Although the targets have changed, it gives a stark reminder of the bleak outlook a nuclear conflict would bring.

The map also gives readers an insight into the devastating radioactive fallout change over a three-day period if bombs were dropped onto Europe.

US nukes were locked onto targets to usher in a “systematic destruction” of the Soviet bloc.

FEAR: How nuclear fallout if bombs were dropped on Europe

ndustrial targets and highly-populated cities were in-line for bombings if the red button was pushed.
Moscow and Leningrad were both listed as Designated Ground Zeroes and would have been pummelled by nearly 350 warheads.

China, one half of Germany, North Korea and Poland were all listed as nuke targets.
The institute has also calculated how many citizens would be killed in each detonation.

A nuke in the heart of Moscow would have killed an unprecedented 1,369,300 people and left nearly 4 million injured.

The stats reveal the devastating effect nuclear explosions have on the rest of the world.
The institute claims most of the world’s population would be at risk if all the 1,100 targets were hit today.

The smoke from nuclear fire would rise into the stratosphere and spread across the planet, triggering a “decade-long mini-ice-age and faming collapse”.

Leading American political analyst and philosopher Noam Chomsky says the rising tension between Russia and the United States might lead to a nuclear war that could cause the end of mankind.
In an interview with Democracy Now! published on Monday, Chomsky warned that the recent of “near collisions” between Russian and US forces amid a growing Western military buildup on Russian borders may bring about nuclear annihilation.
“The nuclear threat is the threat of—on the Russian border,” he said, adding later on that “both sides are acting as if an atomic war is thinkable.
“The US has just sharply increased; it quadrupled military expenses on its side. The Russians are doing something similar. There are constant near collisions, jets coming close to colliding with one another. A Russian jet a couple months ago virtually hit a Danish commercial airliner. US troops are carrying out maneuvers virtually on the Russian border. That threat is escalating and very serious,” Chomsky added.

Russia does not look favorably upon the North Atlantic Organization Treaty (NATO)’s growing deployment of missiles and nuclear weapons near its borders.
Seemingly angered by US and NATO’s move to activate a so-called missile shield in Europe last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to neutralize any threats by the complex against his country’s security.
Tensions between Russian and American military forces surged in April, after two Russian Sukhoi Su-24 warplanes performed multiple simulated attack passes over the US Donald Cook destroyer off Russia’s coast in the Baltic Sea.
A few days later a Russian supersonic Mig-31 aircraft intercepted a US Navy P-8 spy aircraft over Russia’s Far East, flying within several feet of it.

A Russian Su-24 jet performs a "simulated attack" over the USS Donald Cook in the Baltic Sea.

Chomsky said tensions between Moscow and Washington have put the world on the verge of “termination for the species.”
He said the symbolic Doomsday Clock of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which represents a countdown to possible global catastrophe, is moving closer to Midnight, the threat of a nuclear war.
Established in 1947, the founders of the clock, who are advised by 18 Nobel Laureates, said that the clock stood at three minutes to midnight, due to “[un]checked climate change, global nuclear weapons modernizations, and outsized nuclear weapons arsenals.”
That setting was maintained in January 2016.

A US Air Force B-2 stealth bomber drops an inert B61–11 bomb in a 2011 exercise.

According to the Federation of American Scientists, an organization that assesses nuclear weapon stockpiles, in 2013, Russia had around 8,500 total nuclear warheads, 1,800 of them strategically operational, compared to  America’s estimated total 7,700 nuclear warheads of which 1,950 were deemed operational.
Chomsky said aside from nuclear proliferation, climate change also posed a grave threat to humanity.
“The threat of global warming is very serious. Every time one reads a science journal, there’s an even more alarming discovery,” he warned.
US presidential elections, another threat

US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump (L) and Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton

Chomsky also weighed in on the ongoing race for the 2016 presidential election in the US, saying that the threat of nuclear proliferation and climate change are directly affected by the outcome of the November vote and yet are ignored in debates.
“To make it worse, of these two huge threats, we have an electoral—the quadrennial electoral extravaganza is going on right now, of course. And it’s pretty remarkable to see how the worst threats that the human species has ever faced, the most important decisions it must make—and soon—are virtually absent from the discussions and debates,” he explained.
Chomsky has made it known that he supports Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders but is willing to support possible Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump.
In March, Chomsky warned that Trump poses a threat to humanity if he “means what he is saying.”

The deployment this week of a US missile system in Eastern Europe is another step towards all-out global war. Despite Western propaganda demonizing Russia, the truth is that it is Russian military might that is actually holding the line to prevent such a cataclysm.
The United States and its NATO allies are already at war with Russia. This is not hyperbole. It is fact. The US and its allies are amassing weapons and troops on Russia’s borders, and engaging in simulated attacks from various directions.
Orwellian language of “war games” in Western media serves to diminish the disturbing fact that NATO forces are preparing offensive strikes on Russia.
War machinery on both sides are locked on. The encounter last month of the US warship with Russian fighter jets in the Baltic Sea is but one of many such close encounters occurring almost every week. Granted, weapons have not actually been fired yet. Nevertheless, the weapon machinery is engaged.
Again, Western media serve to normalize what is a balefully abnormal situation. At the behest of Washington, the Western countries are trying to blockade Russia with economic sanctions. This is just another provocative act of war.
Moreover, diplomatic channels between Washington and Moscow seem attenuated to levels as low as at any time during the former Cold War. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has apparently maintained a cordial working relationship with his American counterpart John Kerry, but apart from that individual rapport the bilateral position between the two powers has sunken to an all-time low.
Another manifestation of war is the US proxy conflict with Russia in Syria and Ukraine. On the surface there may be talk about ceasefires and political solutions, but make no mistake the jihadist mercenaries and the neo-Nazi Kiev regime are nonetheless American military assets ever-poised to attack Russia’s geo-strategic interests.
The move this week by Washington to activate its long-anticipated missile system in Eastern Europe is another act of aggression in a whole panoply of offensive actions. US and NATO officials deny that the Aegis system is targeting Russia, and make the ludicrous claim that it is to defend Europe against Iranian ballistic rockets or some other “rogue state”. Such transparent, deceitful nonsense.
Russia rightly dismisses Washington and NATO’s cynical assurances. The Kremlin this week said that the installation of the US missile system is a direct threat to Russia’s security. Moscow said it would take counter-measures to restore the strategic balance of nuclear deterrence. It was no coincidence that official Russian reports disclosed details of a new hypersonic Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile that could penetrate any American missile shield to deliver a warhead capable of destroying an area the size of Texas or France.
This is not irresponsible Russian bravado. It is vital that Russia lets aggressive Washington know that any future war moves will be met with equal or greater force. Of course, the outcome would be an all-out nuclear war which could destroy the planet as we know it. But the only way of saving the peace and the planet is for Russia to show that it has the military might to face down any American belligerence.
The upgrade of Russian military powerunder President Vladimir Putin is perhaps the only thing that is holding back the push for all-out war by the US.
And let’s face it. It is the US that is the source of belligerence. As American political analyst Randy Martin points out, the so-called Wolfowitz Doctrine is the touchstone of Washington’s foreign policy. The neocon doctrine of former Department of Defense official Paul Wolfowitz, who served in the George W Bush administrations, is embedded in US military strategic thinking.
Says Martin: “Wolfowitz’s worldview of seeing the US as the world’s only superpower and not tolerating any other rival to the point of going to war, is taught in all American military academies. It is mainstream US military thinking.”
This is what motivates Washington’s bellicose policies towards Russia and China, adds Martin. “The US is programed to go to war with any perceived rival global power in order to maintain its unwarranted ambitions of hegemony.”
The analyst says that if it were not for Russian, and Chinese, military power the US state planners would have gone further by now in prosecuting their war actions, with catastrophic consequences for the world. It is a sobering thought that, despite all the Western media disparagement of Russia, it is actually Russia that is saving the world from such a catastrophic conflict – a conflict that the US alone is pushing.
Indeed, it is averred that Russia’s intervention in Syria may have been partly based on this bigger, far more serious calculation. Not only was Russia salvaging the Middle East country from Western-backed war for regime change. Moscow’s deployment of latest weaponry, including its sea-launched cruise missiles and the S-400 anti-ballistic defense, could have been aimed at demonstrating to Washington that it better think twice about pursuing a wider war agenda.
Little do we know it because of so much Western mind-numbing misinformation, but our world is facing the abyss of nuclear war. Russia’s military power is holding the line from this abyss.
How can we transcend this abysmal situation before stumbling over the edge?
Russia must remain vigilant and strong, with a determination to not capitulate. Theanniversary last week of the defeat of Nazi Germany is a timely reminder of Russia’s epic importance in thwarting international aggression. The same fascist aggression is virulent again in the form of American hegemonic ambitions, and just as with the Third Reich it is Russian fortitude that is preserving the world from Total War.
Political analyst Randy Martin does not see the American public has having a decisive role in practice. In theory, yes, US citizens need to call their warmongering leaders to account and to elect a democratic government – for a change. However, says Martin, the American public are so disenfranchised, brainwashed, beaten down, and oppressed with poverty and consumerist psychosis, he does not see how a mass movement in the US can be mobilized at this point in history in order to abolish the warmongering ruling elite in Washington.
Perhaps, it is up to the people of Europe to take decisive action. Growing popular discontent with European leaders who toe the American line of aggression and sanctions on Russia may have the potential of decisively breaking the US-EU-NATO war front.
What people need to urgently wake up to is that Washington and its European vassals in government are already at war on Russia. There is absolutely no objective justification for this destructive dynamic, other than the US trying to unilaterally assert its hegemony. That is not the policy of a law-abiding democracy; it is a fascist power in the same vein as Nazi Germany.
The war on Russia is being waged on entirely spurious grounds of alleged Russian annexations, invasions and expansionism. This is utter propaganda – again a la Nazi Germany.
The crucial question is this: can Russia hold the line long enough against US-led aggression until the people of the world mobilize the political action to overthrow the criminal regime that operates out of Washington and through European capitals?

US, Russia Missile Row May Lead to Nuclear War: Analyst

The US government’s decision to activate a network of missile systems across Europe may lead to a nuclear war with Russia, an American political analyst says.
The United States on Thursday activated a land-based missile system in Romania, despite Russia’s warning against a systematically increasing US-led arms deployment near its borders.

In an interview with Press TV on Friday, author and radio host Stephen Lendman said Washington was seeking to install “an offensive missile system” capable of delivering different types of warheads in the event of a conflict.

“America wages endless wars, never peace, always wars and Russia absolutely is a US target,” Lendman said.

He described Russia and China as “the final frontiers,” saying that Washington is constantly planning a regime change in the two countries.

Lendman said Washington’s so-called missile shield is a threat to the security of Russia and China, designed to prompt a military response from them.

“My fear is that we are heading for something that could end up becoming a global war and in today’s super weapon era it could be a nuclear war,” the analyst noted.
The war “could be the most devastating war in human history that would have the potential for, literally, ending humanity,” he concluded.

The missiles’ activation marked the penultimate step in the completion of a missile shield, which Washington proposed nearly a decade ago.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has strongly criticized the deployment of US missile system in Eastern Europe near Russia, and vowed to neutralize any threats by the complex against his country’s security.

He also condemned the deployment as a clear violation of arms treaties signed between Russia and the US, adding that it would escalate international tensions.
Putin also criticized Washington for ignoring Russia's concerns and rejecting Moscow’s calls for cooperation on the issue.

This is while on Friday, US President Barack Obama warned Russia against its “aggressive” military build-up in northern Europe.

Are we on the brink of World War THREE? Furious Putin warns he will 'neutralise' threats posed by America's £550m missile shield stationed in Europe

VLADIMIR Putin has ramped up fears that we could be on the brink of another World War.
The Russian President has pledged to “end threats” against the country from US defence positions across Europe.
He accused the United States of threating global security and starting a new arms race as a new £550 million missile shield was switched on in Romania yesterday.
The US and NATO say that they see the missile defence system as vital to defending themselves against the threat of “rogue states”.
But the Kremlin claims the system is designed to end the threat of Moscow’s atomic arsenal.

Putin told Russian media: "We're not going to be dragged into this race. We’ll go our own way.
"We’ll work very accurately without exceeding the plans to finance the re-equipment of our Army and Navy, which have already been laid out for the next several years.
"But we’re going to make corrections to those plans to neutralize the rising threats to Russia's security.
"Recent developments indicate that the situation isn’t getting better.
"Unfortunately, it’s deteriorating. I’m talking about the launch of the radar station in Romania as one of the elements of the up-and-coming US anti-missile defence program."

The system has been under development for years and is, NATO and U.S. officials say, aimed against potential long-range threats from the Middle East, mainly with Iran in mind.
Yet Russia is adamantly opposed to having the advanced military system on its doorstep and the development is certain to further exacerbate tensions between Russia and the West that are more strained than at any time since the Cold War.

The United States and NATO say the missile shield which is able to track and shoot down incoming missiles is purely defensive and is, in any case, powerless against Russia's large stockpile of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

“We have had very, very difficult challenges,” dealing with Russia, said Frank Rose, Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance in Bucharest, Romania on Wednesday. “Russia has been building an advanced system for a long time and they do it very well. We don't have the technical capability to deal with that threat.”

While the Kremlin doesn't view the NATO missile defence system as a threat to its nuclear forces in its current limited shape, it fears that the U.S.-led missile shield may eventually erode the deterrent potential of Russian nuclear forces when it grows more powerful in the future.

Natural Pandemics, Extreme Warfare -
Most Serious Threats Faced by Humanity

News Link: http://sputniknews.com/art_living/20160430/1038887364/humanity-global-risks.html#ixzz48tg7u7XO

30.04.2016

Oxford’s Global Priorities Project has compiled a list of catastrophes - both natural and self-engineered - that could kill off 10 percent or more of the human population: natural pandemics and extreme conventional warfare are the most important global risks, with artificial intelligence (AI) and natural disasters also posing serious threats.

The researchers of the Global Challenges Foundation have ranked the most dangerous threats facing our civilization according to probability.
The likeliest risks include nuclear war and pandemics (both natural and deliberately engineered), followed by disasters stemming from runaway climate change, geoengineering run amok, and disruptions posed by artificial intelligence.
The report, entitled Global Catastrophic Risks 2016, also included low-probability — but high impact —events, like asteroid impacts and supervolcanic eruptions.

The authors defined Global Catastrophic Risk as a “risk of events or processes that would lead to the deaths of approximately a tenth of the world’s population, or have a comparable impact.”

These dangers are qualitatively distinct from existential risks, which are severe enough to wipe out all human life from the planet.
“The global catastrophic risks in this report can be divided into two categories. Some are ongoing and could potentially occur in any given year,” the paper says.
“Others are emerging and may be very unlikely today but will become significantly more likely in the coming decades.”

The most significant ongoing risks are natural pandemics and nuclear war, whereas the most significant emerging risks are catastrophic climate change and risks stemming from emerging technologies, it states.

While explaining the risks of natural pandemics, the authors cited as an example the damage caused by the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918, Ebola, SARS or H5N1 influenza virus.

The invention of nuclear weapons, the report explains, ushered in a new era of risks created by human action.

“A large nuclear war between major powers would likely kill tens or hundreds of millions in the initial conflict, and perhaps many more if a nuclear winter were to follow,” it forecasts.

Climate change is a well-known anthropogenic risk. Even if the world succeeds in limiting emissions, scientists expect significant climate change to occur. This could bring a host of global challenges including environmental degradation, migration, and the possibility of resource conflict.

While explaining the risks stemming from emerging technologies, the authors stated that “emerging technologies promise significant benefits, but a handful could also create unprecedented risks to civilization and the biosphere alike.”

For example, “splitting the atom brought the promise of clean power, but also led to the nuclear bomb, which has brought humanity to the brink of catastrophe on more than one occasion”

The burning of fossil fuels has brought huge improvements in human welfare, but unless strong action is taken soon, there is an unacceptable chance that our children and grandchildren will face catastrophic global warming.

Rapid developments in biotechnology could enable scientists to develop new therapies to reduce the global burden of disease and feed a growing population, but might also in the future give malicious groups the capacity to synthesize devastating pathogens.

Biotechnology could enable the creation of pathogens far more damaging than those found in nature, while in the longer run, artificial intelligence could cause massive disruption.

There are also exogenous risks, which arise independent of human activity (whereas even natural epidemics are spread by humans).

Among those are supervolcano eruptions, threats from asteroids and comets.

“The historical evidence suggests that exogenous global catastrophic risks cannot be too frequent, and may therefore be much less likely than some of the anthropogenic (caused by humans) risks,” the report therefore states.

Fears of 'THE BIG ONE' as SEVEN major earthquakes strike Pacific region in just 96 hours

SCIENTISTS fear a monster earthquake could be about to strike after seven earthquakes in just 96 hours struck the Pacific region, killing hundreds of people.

At least 413 people have been killed in Ecuador’s biggest earthquake in decades as a 7.8 magnitude quake struck off the Pacific coast on Saturday and was felt around the Andean nation of 16 million people, causing panic as far away as the highland capital Quito.
Vice President Jorge Glas said as well as leaving hundreds dead, more than 2,500 people were injured.
The latest quake follows devastating tremors in Japan late last week when one, measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale, injured more than 1,000 trapping people in collapsed buildings only a day after a quake killed nine people in the same region.
Rescue crews searched for survivors of a magnitude 7.3 earthquake that struck Japan's Kyushu Island, the same region rattled by a 6.2 quake two days earlier.
Around 20,000 troops have had to be deployed following the latest 7.3 earthquake at 1.25am local time on Saturday.
Roads have also been damaged and big landslides have been reported, there are also 200,000 households without power.
The death toll in the latest Kyushu earthquake is 16 people and a previous earthquake that struck the area on Thursday had killed nine people.
There have been other large earthquakes recorded in recent days, including a major one in southern Japan which destroyed buildings and left at least 45 people injured, after Myanmar was rocked on Wednesday.

Tremors were also felt as far as 500 miles away at the national park in India where the Royal couple Kate and William were visiting.
Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency said 7,262 people have sought shelter at 375 centers since Friday in Kumamoto Prefecture.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe vowed to do everything he could to save lives following the disaster.
He said: "Nothing is more important than human life and it's a race against time."
On Thursday, The Japanese Red Cross Kumamoto Hospital confirmed 45 were injured, including five with serious injuries after a quake of magnitude 6.2 to 6.5 and a series of strong aftershocks ripped through Kumamoto city.
Several buildings were damaged or destroyed and at least six people are believed to be trapped under homes in Mashiki. Local reports said one woman was rescued in a critical condition
Scientists say there has been an above average number of significant earthquakes across south Asia and the Pacific since the start of the year.

The increased frequency has sparked fears of a repeat of the Nepal quake of 2015, where 8,000 people died, or even worse.
Tonga suffered a 6.1 magnitude tremor.
Thursday's quake in Japan was followed by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake which struck off the coast of the southern Philippines.
The earthquake happened at 2.20am (Singapore time) off Mindanao island.
Local authorities said there was no tsunami risk and that they had not received reports of casualties or damage.

In Japan, a number of buildings were destroyed by the powerful 6.4 magnitude quake.

Japan's Meteorological Agency said the epicentre was in the Mashiki town in the Kumamoto prefecture.
Officials said the region's nuclear facilities were not affected.
A 6.0 magnitude earthquake also hit on Friday off the coast of the Pacific island of Vanuatu, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
It was 53 miles from town Port Orly and the fourth one this week in the immediate area, after a 6.4-strength tremor hit a week earlier.
Vanuatu is on the "Pacific Ring of Fire," one of the most seismic parts of the globe and known for its earthquakes and volcanoes.
Seismologists say the Himalayan region is overdue for a tremor stronger than Nepal's 7.9 strength quake last year.
Friday's quakes take the total to nine across Asia in a period of just over three and a half months - nearly three every month.
Just six days ago, on April 10, six people died in Pakistan when a 6.6-magnitude quake hit Kabul with aftershocks in India
Two days before, on April 8, there was a magnitude 4.2 earthquake in Nepal.
Nepal had suffered a larger 5.5 magnitude one on February 22.
A month before, on January 20, there was a 6.1-magnitude earthquake in China, and 16 days earlier 11 people died when a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Manipur in India.
India's disaster management experts from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said in January an 8.2 magnitude quake was due in the already ruptured Himalayan region.
The 2011 Sikkim earthquake created more rupturs in the Himalayas, on top of those caused by previous quakes, and scientists have feared the area is continually weakening with each new quake.
India's National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) says stress in the mountains of the north-east and the colliding of the Himalayan plate iand the Indo-Burmese plate in the to the puts the whole region on red alert.
Tectonic plates west of the Nepal earthquake are still locked and scientists fear this is another trigger waiting to go off.
A scientific study published in Nature Geoscience said the Nepal quake: "Failed to rupture the locked portions of the Himalayan thrust beneath and west of the Kathmandu basin because of some persistent barrier of mechanical and structural origin."
Stresses locked in this area could be released, potentially causing a massive quake.
BK Rastogi, director general of the Ahmedabad-based Institute of Seismological Research, said: "An earthquake of the same magnitude is overdue. That may happen either today or 50 years from now in the region of the Kashmir, Himachal, Punjab and Uttrakhand Himalyas. "Seismic gaps have been identified in these regions.
"The accumulation of stress is going on everywhere. But where it will reach the elastic limit, we don't know nor also when. But what we do know is that it is happening everywhere."

The Big Ones: Scientist warns up to 4 quakes over 8.0 possible under ‘current conditions’

18 Apr, 2016

Sunday’s devastating earthquake in Ecuador might just be the beginning, according to a seismologist who says that current conditions in the Pacific Rim could trigger at least four quakes with magnitudes greater than 8.0.

Five years on from Japan’s devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami, the country fears a repeat of the disaster which left more than 15,000 people dead.

Scientists at Tokyo University estimate there is a 98 percent chance that, in the next 30 years, Japan will be hit by an earthquake equivalent to the “Great Kanto” of 1923, which measured 8.9 and killed an estimated 142,800 people.

Seismologists at the Japan Meteorological Agency, however, put the odds of this happening at 70 percent.

Japan has some of the world’s strictest building codes due to the amount of seismic activity in the area, with Tokyo getting rocked at least once a month.
Buildings may be able to withstand an earthquake, but as the 2011 quake proved, the ensuing tsunami can cause more damage including the nuclear fallout at Fukushima.

In the Himalayan region where 8,000 people were killed a year ago when a quake measuring 8.0 hit Nepal, India’s disaster management experts from the Ministry of Home Affairs warned in January that another quake of that size was long overdue in the region.

Tectonic plates west of the Nepal epicenter remain locked together with scientists fearing the accumulation of stress will soon reach its elastic limit.

Russia’s, China’s Real Hypersonic Gliders Able to Break US
THAAD System

“The hypersonic tests by China and Russia are aimed at causing a threat to the US, which plans to set up a missile defense system in South Korea,” the South China Morning Post, a Hong Kong-based English-language newspaper writes, quoting Professor He Qisong, a defense policy specialist at the Shanghai University of Political Science and Law.
His comment refers to the recent successful tests by the two countries of their offset Hypersonic Gliders.

The view is echoed by Beijing-based military expert Li Jie, who said that China was trying to use the recent DF-ZF test to warn the US that the PLA (Chinese People’s Liberation Army) had “another powerful weapon capable of countering the THAAD system.”
Two Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors are launched during a successful intercept test

The US proposes to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in South Korea, claiming it is needed to protect its regional allies from North Korea.
The proposal has already been condemned by both China and Russia as an aggravation of the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, together with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi warned on Friday against using Pyongyang’s activities, such as the recent nuclear test and multiple missile launches, as a pretext for building up US military presence in the region.

Last week Beijing conducted the seventh successful test of its DF-ZF glide vehicle designed to defeat US missile defenses.
WU-14 hypersonic glide vehicle
WU-14 hypersonic glide vehicle
The DF-ZF is an ultra-high-speed missile which can travel at speeds between Mach 5 and Mach 10, which is 5 to 10 times the speed of sound and is capable of penetrating US air defense systems based on interceptor missiles.

The hypersonic strike vehicle (Pentagon’s previous code name WU-14) consists of a rocket that reaches the upper atmosphere to then release a glider that reaches hypersonic speeds upon descent.

The ballistic missile booster was fired from the Wuzhai missile launch center in central China.

It transported the DF-ZF HGV (hypersonic glide vehicle) near the edge of the atmosphere, the boundary between space and Earth’s atmosphere, approximately 100 km above the ground, where it separated from its launcher and then glided to an impact range a few thousands kilometers away, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

Once HGV reaches that height, it begins to glide in a relatively flat trajectory by executing a pull-up maneuver and accelerates to speeds of up to Mach 10. Its velocity can range between 6,400 kilometers per hour to 11,200 kilometers per hour.

The gliding phase enables the HGV not only to maneuver aerodynamically – performing evasive actions and evading interception – but also extends the range of the missile.

The maneuvering glider, traveling at several thousand kilometers per hour, was tracked by satellites as it flew west along the edge of the atmosphere to an impact area in the western part of the country.

It still remains unclear whether the DF-ZF HGV will be armed with nuclear or conventional warheads.

The DF-ZF HGV could also be launched atop an anti-ship ballistic missile to target naval assets. For example, a DF-21 armed with a DF-ZF HGV would extend the missile’s range from 2,000 to over 3,000 km (2,485 miles).

According to the US intelligence officials, the DF-ZF could be used as part of a conventional strategic strike weapon capable of hitting targets around the world within an hour.
The Pentagon has kept a close eye on the development of the DF-ZF since it was first tested in January 2014.
The congressional US-China Economic and Security Review Commission stated in its most recent annual report that the hypersonic glide vehicle program was “progressing rapidly” and that the new strike weapon could be deployed by 2020.
A more powerful version was also in development and could be fielded by 2025, it said.
The Chinese Defense Ministry confirmed another Beacon report that Beijing tested its newest intercontinental ballistic missile, the DF-41 which has a range of at least 12,000km on April 12.
Also in April, Russia conducted its second flight test of a revolutionary hypersonic glide vehicle, known as 3M22 Zircon glider.
The hypersonic glider was launched atop RS-18A strategic ballistic missile (UR-100N, NATO designation SS-19 Stiletto) from eastern Russia andis reported to be successful.
However no details were provided on how fast the vehicle went or the distance it traveled.
Russia’s 3M22 vehicle is expected to enter into production in 2018.

WW3 Creeps InThe Arctic:

US Navy Deploys Nuclear Submarine After Russia’s Growler

PUBLISHED: 12:21 AM, MAR 22, 2016
An ocean of ice did not hinder two US Navy submarines to reach one of the world’s unforgiving bodies of water—the arctic ocean. The deployment was made following Russia’s stationing of its S-400 advanced Growler surface-to-air missile systems in December.
Arctic ocean is notoriously known as one of the dangerous bodies of water in the world for a marine vessel because of its condition. Aside from the sub zero temperature all year round, no one can really tell what’s beneath this icy ocean and icebergs are common in the region. This challenging terrain does not stop the US Navy to reach this far ocean up in the Northern Hemisphere. In fact, two submarines from the mainland USA ventured the sea for days and safely reach the freezing ocean, an official statement from the US Navy stated.
Navy Cmdr. Scott Luers said the five-week mission will provide a different level of training to the Navy as navigating and working in ice-covered ocean, such as the Arctic, is totally different from that of an open ocean.
“Submarine operations as part of ICEX provide the necessary training to maintain a working knowledge of an extremely challenging region that is very different than any other ocean in the world. Navigating, communicating and maneuvering are all different in an arctic environment as there are surfaces both above and below a submarine,” Luers was quoted as saying by the Navy report.
The Navy also boasted its Arctic submarine laboratory, saying that it’s one of the best in the world, equipped with latest technology. The US Navy has been conducting under-ice activities for more than five decades now.
However, the recent deployment of US Navy of its nuclear submarines has raised once again the fear about the shaping World War 3 in the Arctic region. As previously reported by Morning News USA, Russia has stationed two S-400 advanced Growler surface-to-air missile systems in six polar bases within the border of U.S. in the Arctic.  These growlers stationed at the Wrangle Island and Cape Schmidt in Chukotka were reportedly put on war alert round the clock.
Furthermore, in September, while President Barack Obama was visiting Alaska, five mysterious Chinese navy ships have curiously appeared in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska. At the time, Pentagon officials have acknowledged that the sudden operation of the Chinese ships has a “curious timing.”
For several occasions, US officials has repeatedly acknowledged that both Russia and China pose grave threats against the nations’ security. Worse, these two world powers are very much vocal about their alliance as they have a common enemy – the United States.

  • Europe is closer to using nuclear weapons than at any time since the end of the Cold War, warns former Russian foreign minister

    • The threat of nuclear war is closer than at any time since the 1980s according to ex-minister Igor Ivanov
    • Speaking in Brussels, Mr Ivanov warned the threat has grown due to the Ukraine crisis
    • His views, from a man who served as Russian foreign minister from 1998-2004, will alarm diplomats looking for a peaceful resolution to the conflict

The threat of nuclear war has been brought much closer thanks to the stand-off in Ukraine warns a former Russian foreign minister.

Igor Ivanov, who served from 1998 to 2004 and now leads a government backed think-tank, said on Saturday: 'The risk of confrontation with the use of nuclear weapons in Europe is higher than in the 1980s.'

He said the East versus West altercation over the Ukraine crisis has meant the risk of nuclear warfare is growing despite countries cutting their arsenals.
Speaking at an event in Brussels with the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Poland, Mr Ivanov said: 'We have less nuclear warheads, but the risk of them being used is growing.'
His comments will alarm European and NATO diplomats who are looking for a peaceful solution to end the conflict in Ukraine, which has claimed over 9,000 lives since April 2014.
Mr Ivanov said there is little chance of a broad reconciliation between the parties, and blamed a missile defence shield the United States is creating in Europe for raising the stakes.

Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg has warned Russia about intimidating its neighbours by speaking about the threat of nuclear weapons.

But the ex-minister said: 'It can be assured that once the U.S. deploys its missile defence system in Poland, Russia would respond by deploying its own missile defence system in Kaliningrad,' referring to a Russian territory in the Baltics.

'The paths of Europe and Russia are seriously diverging and will remain so for a long time ... probably for decades to come,' he added, before claiming it was Russia's destiny to be a leader in greater Eurasia from Belarus to the Chinese border.

Both Russia and the United States account for around 90 per cent of the global stock of nuclear weapons, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.
They are estimated to have around 7,000 warheads each.

Mr Ivanov's comments come as militarisation in Europe increased today due to the migration crisis.

Armoured personnel were seen patrolling along the Hungarian-Serbian border blocking the main path of migrants looking to leave the Middle East and enter the EU.

The Real Likelihood of a Nuclear War

BRAVE NEW WORLD
John Harrison

News link: http://sputniknews.com/radio_brave_new_world/20160317/1036455898/the-real-likelihood-of-a-nuclear-war.html#ixzz48tUuNwQG

Dr. Paul Craig Roberts, who served as an Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Economic Policy in the Reagan administration, shares his view that there is a real likelihood of a nuclear war breaking out. Below are the main points covered in this radio programme

A US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier has arrived in South Korea’s largest port city to take part in joint war games amid heightened tensions and threats by North Korea to wipe out its enemies.
The carrier, which is the flagship of the USS John C. Stennis Strike Group, arrived in Busan, 450 kilometers southeast of Seoul, early on Sunday to join the Key Resolve military exercise.
On Saturday, US and South Korean troops staged a big amphibious landing exercise on South Korea’s east coast, storming simulated North Korean beach defenses. The drills were part of eight weeks of military maneuvers by the allies.
About 55 US marine aircraft and 30 US and South Korean ships, including the USS Bonhomme Richard and USS Boxer, took part in the assault on beaches near Pohang city, according to the US Navy.

Pyongyang condemned the assault drills, calling them “nuclear war moves” taken as preparations for an invasion.
The North’s military said it was prepared to respond “with an ultra-precision blitzkrieg strike of the Korean style.”
This year’s Key Resolve drills mark the largest of their kind as the allies step up military cooperation in the face of North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.

More than 300,000 South Korean and 17,000 American troops are attending the war games in a show of military power.
On Thursday, North Korean ruler Kim Jong-un watched as his forces fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea in response to the massive drills.
Kim has also ordered more nuclear tests using the miniaturized nuclear warheads, which he recently claimed the country has produced.
“The nuclear warheads have been standardized to be fit for ballistic missiles by miniaturizing them,” the official KCNA news agency quoted him as saying

The Korean Peninsula has been locked in a cycle of military tensions since the 1950-1953 Korean War, which ended in an armistice. No peace deal has been signed, meaning the two Koreas remain technically at war.
Tensions have escalated since the start of 2016 after the North’s nuclear test in January and a long-range rocket launch on February 7.
Pyongyang says the rocket launch was aimed at placing an earth observation satellite into orbit but Washington and Seoul say the move was a cover for an intercontinental ballistic missile test.

N Korean Army Ready for Pre-Emptive Strike Amid S Korea-US Drill

The North Korean military said Saturday it was ready for a pre-emptive attack against the South Korean and US troops involved in the ongoing military drill in case they try to invade the North.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Military drills organized by Seoul and Washington and believed to be the two nations' largest ever joint exercises kicked off in South Korea on Monday. The drills include the massive Ssangyong landing drill.

"From now on, our units deployed in eastern, central and western parts of the frontline are ready for a pre-emptive retaliatory strike against the enemy groups involved in the SSangyong drill," the General Staff of the North's Korean People's Army (KPA) said in a statement.
According to the KPA, the ongoing SSangyong drill is the high point of a plan of North Korea's "enemies" to overthrow the political system in the country through unexpected troops landing and "Pyongyang seizure."
The US-S.Korea exercises come as the United States expressed great concern over North Korea’s recent threats it would ready its nuclear weapons.
In recent months, Pyongyang has conducted a series of long-range rocket tests, and a nuclear weapons test in early January.
